The shuttle from the port drops you here (could also walk). We had a long slow line to get tickets for the buffalo cart rides and then to wait for a cart. It was crowded inside the building. This is where you meet to take a shuttle back to the port. One could walk the city faster than the buffalo carts and see more.

We took a ferry from Ishgaki to Taketomi and had no real plans once we reached the island. We were able to ask one of the vans parked at the ferry port if we could rent bikes for a few hours, or for the day. We were very happy with our luck... The van we chose belonged to Taketomi Kanko Center and they were extremely fast, flexible and welcoming. We were able to grab a ride from the ferry port to their headquarters (which is conveniently located in the centre of town) and rented our bikes without any hassles. We spent a couple of hours touring the island, resting at Kondoi and Kaiji beach. An added bonus: we picked the times of departure and arrival (they have quite a few times offered throughout the day).

Bike rentals cost: 300/hour
Total time it takes to bike the whole island: 2 hours
*A map of the island is provided in English
*They provide a van ride back to the ferry port
*The Buffalo Cart tour they offer seemed to be a big hit among tourists
*There are glass-bottom boat tours offered through the Taketomi Marine Club

The main reason people visit Taketomi Island is for the water buffalo tours and that you can see so many traditional homes. There is also a beach for star sand but the water buffalo doesn't take you there. From the tourist center, a water buffalo pulls a wagon full of people and the tour guide/buffalo handler points out local attractions and features of Taketomi. The guide also has to be on bathroom duty for the buffalo and there may be several bathroom breaks. The guide will also play sanshin and sing. The tourist center has shuttles that will pick you up at the ferry terminal upon arrival and no prior reservations are needed.

Being part-Okinawan, I've always wanted to do this since a child but once I was riding, I felt a bit bad for the buffalo. They seem to be treated well but what else do they do? Where do they sleep? I became concerned. Once the trip ends, they will take your photo but we opted out. The end point is where all the buffalo are resting so I went around looking more carefully at each one. They seemed so tranquil but they are powerful beasts. My mom really enjoyed that the local roads traversed are coral white.

It seemed like those on bicycles were struggling so even though I can ride well, I'm glad I didn't rent a bike. Plus, I can imagine heat strokes in the summer. Thankfully, we visited in a cooler month. After finishing our cart door, we walked just to the east and spent time at an utaki, sacred Okinawan site. This utaki is currently not listed and there's nothing particularly special about it but I've never been to an utaki. You take a lot of things for granted as a kid so the cultural aspects of the buffalo cart going through a village of traditional homes and the utaki made it worthwhile to me. For typical tourists, I assume they want to hear a song and say they did the tour. Disclaimer: tours are completely in Japanese, songs are in Okinawan. I marked this as friends are there was not an option for Family (adults). I imagine it kills time for children but they may get bored.

This is an excellent way to learn about Taketomi, its people and history, as well as the surrounding islands.

The main reason to visit the Taketomi Tourist Centre is because it is the hub of the whole water buffalo tour. It starts and finishes here as do the Bicycle rentals and any other activity on this very small island. There is a small shop and you are able to buy cold drinks. The mini buses from and too the ferry port are also controlled from the tourist centre. Don't forget to book in at the desk if you require a mini bus back to the port. It serves its purpose, nothing more and nothing less.
