The old town does not carry the atmosphere at all as there are many other nicer old towns in japan. There are only a mere few old houses ie along the main road there are 5 and along the canal just a few.

The canal is rather short with a few koi and many large bigger brown carps.

Not a place worth going if u are not staying in Tochigi.

On my first trip to Tochigi city, I was surprised at all the striking kura-style buildings that remain in this town. The thick plaster walls of the buildings, some of them dating back 200 years, have served well in protecting against fire and other damage. Ornate Victorian Stick style houses can also be seen, with everything remarkably well-preserved. Tochigi City, which was once a stopping point for travelers on their way to Nikko from Edo, has somehow been kept a secret. The town itself recalls the feeling of Kurashiki or Kawagoe townscape, but on a smaller, more charming scale. It's also much less crowded and less commercial than these, and more authentic. Highly recommended for fans of architecture- I'll visit here again.
