- Ananth 727499Tiruppur, India1,523 contributionsBreathtaking .. nothing more to say..Gifted and blessed to have a visit here. From Thanjavur, we can visit this holy pilgrimage place within an hour by cab. The temple lies in the middle of the town majestically. The structure and majestic look of the temple itself is breathtaking. From the entrance of you look at the vimana of the temple, nandhi and the dwajasthamab Stands accurately in straight line.. How calculative the people of that period was .. it was really breathtaking. The hardwork of each and every people of that time is seen in wach and every sculpture of this temple. There is a famous lion faced temple inside the temple campus.. Don't miss this place of worship.. Real wonder of all times.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten August 10, 2024
- LoveTravel8171431 contributionGangaikonda cholapuram TempleIt is a very ancient and beautiful temple and built with astonishing structural technology with great design. It is maintained by the central government archaeological department. It is worth visiting this temple and spend peaceful time. Preferable visiting time will be before 10:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. to avoid hot son heat. Well maintained toilets and drinking water facilities are available on the left side of the entrance of the temple. It is about 40 km from mayiladuthurai.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 10, 2024

Gangaikonda Cholapuram is a very fine temple with beautiful carvings on the pillows walls ceilings. this place is slightly away from the hustle and bustle of any city but it's definitely worth a visit. do not miss the unique carvings on each and every pillar of the temple and also the carvings on the backside of the temple. The big lion face is also attractive. It will be great if the government makes guides available or boards are written so that this temple can be understood in a more better and meaningful way. This place is amazing for photography too.

People always likened this temple to be a mirror image or the feminine version of the Thanjavur Big Temple, but I beg to differ. The layout is significantly different and though its scale is relatively more modest, its carvings are also a lot more intriguing. We went at night which adds to the overall mystical quality of the temple. Note that the actual location of this temple is a few hours away from Thanjavur and not in Thanjavur itself, and maybe that's why it feels less touristy. Worth a visit to avoid the crowd!

The Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple is yet another of the Great Living Chola Temples. This is a protected monument designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An 11th century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, this is an active temple and is very well maintained by The Archaeological Survey of India. The magnificent temple is worth visiting for its excellent architecture and sculpture. The temple is open from 8am till 12 noon and from 4pm till 8pm. Entry is free and car parking is available, Parking fees were Rs.40 /- at the time of our visit. There is a restaurant just outside the temple precincts.

One of the master piece of Chola dynasty. Worth seeing the Dravidian architect, as it was on its acme at that time. Entry is free, temple remains open for a longer duration but the darshan of Grabhgrah (Shivlinga) is for limited hours (closes between 1230 to 1600 & after 1800 hrs (perhaps) There are two temples one is Gangaikonda and the other one is Bradeshwara both are about 70 kms apart.

One of the unique things I noticed was the carving of the 12 sun signs on the ceiling of this temple. It is about 50 mts from the entrance and quite dark. Do not miss this wonder. The sun signs are supposedly developed by the Greeks and how the same has been depicted so long ago will be interesting to know.

One of several staggering beautiful temple sites in Tamil Nadu. We were there during the Pongal harvest festival and there were flocks of exquisite saris moving around to add to the beauty. If there are pilgrms, be prepared for selfie requests - lovely. We had a guide and I think it adds so much to the experience. Yes, visually it is awesome and you can see that, but a little interpretation fills out the experience so much more. Try to be there in the morning, I expect it could be hot walking around in the open. You will have to remove your shoes - best to leave them in your car as there are no safe storage facilities. No shops as well, so plan your food and drink requirements ahead. Wondrous place.

The pinacle of Chola architecture and sculpture. A green oasis with a heart of soaring granite. Keep aside two hours to explore this complex. Arrive before noon or after 4 pm if you want to offer prayers in the sanctum.

I never want to miss this place whenever i am going to Kumbakonam/Tanjore. As part of our Aarupadaiveedu Trip from Chennai, we covered this place to on 24 Dec 2019 when going from Swamimalai to pazhmuthir solai. it was raining when we visited this place. that made it look even more beautiful. We went to the temple and had dharsan of Lord Siva. Then we spend about an hour by taking photos and watching the wonders our ancestors created. The place was very clean and well maintained. Must visit place for all Tamilians to know their history.

Along with brihadeeshwarar and airavateshwarar temple this gangaikonda cholapuram is one another exquisite architectural temple, which is also a UNESCO world heritage site.
It is such a serene and calm place that we couldn't step out of the temple even after a long time being there, I felt something is special in this temple than any other. The green lawn adds an extraordinary beauty to this outstanding place

What's the best way to reach Gangaikionda Cholapuram from Puducherry?
Written December 10, 2019
Take the bus towards Thanjavur. Public transport state run government buses should be available. Not all may go through Gangaikonda cholapuram temple. The ones that go, stop right in front of the temple

Is there is Cabs like uber or Ola available to go to Gangaikonda cholapuram from Chidhambaram

Please confirm the timings for daily darshan in January. If the temple is closed during the day are devotees permitted to enter and see other parts of the temple other than the sanctum where the idol is kept.
Written December 28, 2016
Can somebody who has visited Gangai Konda confirm the correct timings when the temple is open daily. Also (if) when it is closed during the day can one enter and see the other structures/art in the temple (I am assuming that like many temples only the portion where the main idil is kept is locked) or the doors to the entrance are locked denying entry?
Written December 28, 2016
the temple is closed at 12 noon.. I had visited minutes after 12 noon and it was already being closed about 3 months back. best bet is to go before 12 noon or after 4 30 pm. you can still go in to the outer prahara when the temple is closed, but cannot go into the main Mantapa and sanctum sanctorum. hope that helps.

I want to go there this December. But now the bridge between Kumbakonam and Chidambaram in NH81 is closed? My plan is from Chidambaram by bus. And then move to Kumbakonam by bus either. Please tell me how to reach there easily.
Written November 21, 2016
hi,
You can reach there easily from chidambaram by bus but the frequency of service is less.
