We visited the Tanjore Big temple in January 2025. Words fall short to describe the experience of visiting this temple. The colossal structure stands as a testimony to the engineering skills and talent of our ancestors. We had travelled from Trichy. It was about and hour and a half drive from Tricky. The weather at this time of year was good. There was a light breeze and it was pleasant. The temple visit was planned for evening so that we could avoid the morning/afternoon sun as well as be available when the lights come on post sun down. The road from Tricky to Tanjore was smooth with very little traffic. The driver had taken the toll rod and the ride was fast and smooth. We have a paid shoe stand just near the temple entrance. Charges are very nominal. There was crowd in the premises, but the temple premise is so huge that you do not feel the crowd. I could just wonder at the huge grant Nandi statue in front of the lord. The shiva lingam itself was close to 10 feet in height and grand. We had a good darshan at close quarters. Albeit we did pay for the darshan from close range and a small archana. It was worth it.. The temple takes on a new feel at sundown. The wait for the lights to come on was also worth it.. The temples and surroundings are lit up post sun set.. It was a different feeling altogether. Merely sitting quietly on the steps or any seating area and admiring the temple itself is a different feeling. It is worth a visit if you ever plan a trip down south.

Built in early 11th Century (1010 AD) by Rajaraja I, this astonishing megalith incredibly doesn't cast a shadow!!!.... the Shiva Lingam deity weighing at 20 tons is one of the largest in India.... the dome rested on the Shikara is a massive 80 ton sculpted granite block... The Temple stands as a testament to ancient engineering prowess with remarkably, no cement, soil, or binding agents used in its construction

"Brihad" means Large or Grand. The temple extends over 36 acres and was built more than thousand years ago. When Europe and Western world were in the dark ages, Bharat was a millenia ahead in terms of engineering, architecture and spirituality. A beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The 200 feet Gopuram is testament to bharatiya ingenuity a 1000 years ago. The temple has immense detailing. It will take a library to explain the beauty of the temple. Must visit.

An amazing temple from an architecture point of view. We made the mistake of not hiring a guide. As a result, we missed some of the smaller details. A couple of things to remember:
1. This is a living temple. So, even though the timings when it is open are published, you cannot access the inside of the temple during certain times... so you have to wait. We hit one of those times (around 8am). We used that time to explore the outside.
2. If you see stairs, and think you can climb them... do it. Later we realised that we had missed seeing the Dakshinamurthy temple.
3. Hire a guide if you can. We wanted to see all three of the UNESCO sites on one day and were in a time crunch. So, we did not hire a guide. My advise would be to start early and take your time exploring the temple with the help of a guide. We reached around 8am after breakfast. A smarter thing to do would have been to start exploring around 6am, then have breakfast before heading to the next destination.
4. Lot of walking to do. You will not be allowed to wear footwear inside. So, if the weather looks like it will be hot, wear socks. That helped us. Very clean and well maintained.

Amazing temple ... definitely worth visiting.

I visited this place with my family (wife and daughter) during morning hours at around 10:00. I travelled from Kumbakonam by private car and its around 36km from my hotel. We decided to visit this place as it is rated as Cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We got the opportunity to attend the morning rituals wherein the temple priest offers prayers and there is music going on in the back ground. We paid donation to visit the inner sanctum wherein we could closely observe the Lord Shiva Lingam. A huge Nandi statue can be seen in direct view of Shiva lingam which is placed outside the temple under a separate roof.

Within the temple courtyard there is separate temple of Lord Sri Ganesha (second son of Lord Shiva), Lord Sri Kartikeya (first son of Lord Shiva), Goddess Sri Parvati (wife of Lord Shiva).

The temple is pretty quiet in the morning and could be the best time to visit and avoid crowd.

People visitng the temple may buy offerings from within the temple premises at affordable rates.

There are 2 shops near the first entrance to the right where tourists may buy memoirs.

It is definitely a good place to visit and see the architecture, mammoth structure being built in Indian history by Indian Rulers.

The temple is a fantastic place. It never fails to evoke admiration and amazement every time one visits the precincts. It is just an awesome place.
However, I must recount the poor experience had with depositing footwear with the authorised agent just on the right of the temple as you enter it. They are not professionally organised and the result was that we lost an expensive pair of Adidas shoes. We did complain and they just settled the issue with some meagre compensation, which was grossly inadequate. As we did not have time, we just moved on. Hence, please be careful with depositing footwear or any valuables over there.

Brihadeeswara temple, known as the Big temple locally, is situated in Tanjavur district of Tamilnadu. It is one of the largest and best maintained temples of India. The main temple was built in the the 11th century. There has been several additions to the temple afterwards. Though there are some damages over a period of 1000 years, still it's a majestic structure, which has withstood invasion, earthquake etc. The temple opens in the morning from 6 AM to 12.30 PM, again from 4 to 9 PM. Morning time is generally less crowded and more peaceful. But one must visit in the evenings to view the temple glowing in the setting sun and when it is lighted. There are several smaller temples in the complex which are equally wonderful. A must visit place for all Indians.

The Brihadeshwara temple is also called the big temple in Tanjavur. It is easy to reach her with your own vehicle as well as by public transport. In case you have come here in your own vehicle you have a big parking opposite to the main entrance of the temple. The ambitious temple by Rajaraja – I begin in 1003 and completed in 1010 CE and was designed to represent a cosmic structure the Mahameru. The temple was built in the courtyard 240 by 120 meters in the ratio of 1:2 with granite block brought from distance of approximately 50 kilometers. The Shikhar is at a height of 60 meters and weighs 81 tons. Some of the must things to see here is the beautifully decorated entrance doors, the big nandi, for those who understand Tamil the backside of the temple gives a big script of how the financials of the temple were managed about the revenue and the expenditure. also visit or temple on the right side which has beautiful Shivlinga and Parvati.
The total time spent year could be approximately one hour 30 minutes. You need to wear traditional Indian dress to visit the temple. The premises has clean toilets which are available on right side the temple complex. Drinking water needs to be carried on your own. Cloak Room not available.

The Brihadeeshwara Temple (also known as the Rajarajeswaram or RajaRajeshwara Temple), is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Erected by Raja Raja Chola I, it is a well-recognized example of superior Tamil architecture. It is under the care of the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) and not an 'active' temple, hence one is allowed to enter all the spaces to enjoy its beauty at its fullest. Its spacious lawns are also well maintained (aside from a few discarded candy wrappers here and there) but since a snake scurried across the footpath as we entered, we'd recommend keeping your shoes on and be careful where stepping when entering darkened spaces. We spent well over an hour and would have stayed longer if we could have; there was so much to see. The crowning touch on this temple were the green parrots (symbol of Meenakshi) who have made their nests in some of the tall spires. If only India's 'living' temples were as well maintained and as clean....

As for the temple itself, the first thing one sees is a giant Nandi, the sacred bull and vehicle of the Hindu god Shiva, facing the temple proper, the sign that one is entering a temple of Shiva. In front of him inside the temple, is a smaller black statue of Nandi. A guardian stands on both sides of the entrance (and the other main doorways) and not far away, is a small black statue of Ganesh, the elephant-headed son of Shiva. Along the external walls are an array of gods and goddesses, including Shiva in many of his forms and a beautiful tableau of Shiva and Parvati together, Ganesh, Meenakshi and other gods and goddesses. (Take a guidebook if you don't know your gods & goddesses to enjoy this temple at its fullest.) Small round-bellied dwarf 'ganas' (attendants) appear everywhere. These are understood to be overseen by Ganesh, giving him his other name of Ganapati.

Try to visit early in the morning so you can enjoy the tranquil beauty of this temple before the school and tourist groups arrive.

Brihadeshwara Temple is located at Thanzavur ,TN. It waas built by Chola emperor Rajaraja -1 in 1003-1010 AD. It ihas one of biggest Shivalinga in India .It is a architectural
marvel . As we learn from literature the temple is made of granite and has no underground piling and no massion was used to couple granite pieces .
We started from Madurai early in the morning and reached by noon . From bus stand there are autos . The temple has locker facilty . We dropped our luggage and shoes in different places . There are some shops for water and soft drinks. It was very interesting to see a shop for the products made by local community .
The temple is located in the middle of the compound and whole compound is cemented .As we left our shoes in the second gate we had walk bare footed . It so hot . Finding difficulty to place foot . Instead of walking we were almost running . The first buildin is Nandi mandi. After a gap the second one if Brass Natarajan on the right side of entrance . A beautiful corridoor as one can see at Rameshwaram leads to sanctorum .A big Shivling can be seen from distance . The walls of the temple is decorated with artwork .I was amazed to see non hindu people visiting temple. So I asked the priest about it . He said all are wellcome.

I have visited this place twice. Brihadeeswarar temple is also called Peruvudaiyar Kovil and Thanjai Periya Kovil. The main god of this temple is Lord Shiva.

It is built by a great Tamil king Raja Raja Chozha and it was constructed in 1010. In 2010, this temple celebrated its 1000th anniversary. This temple is a representation of Tamil culture. The height of the Shiva statue in this temple is 12 feet which represents the 12 vowels in the Tamil Language. The height of the Nandhi statue is 18 feet it is built on a single rock and it represents the Consonants in the Tamil language.

The distance between the Shiva statue and the Nandhi statue is 216 feet which represents the uyirmei (combination of vowels and consonants) letters in the Tamil Language. The Vimana which is the topmost part of the temple weighs above 80 tons, still, it is considered an engineering wonder, how they placed, this amount of weight at the topmost part. This temple has all the names of the sculptor on the walls of the temple.

One of the largest temples in Southern India, this is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is open from 6am to 12noon and from 4pm till 8pm. Entry is free and paid parking is available. One needs to spend some time to appreciate the sculpture, architecture and beauty of the temple. This temple is one of the Great Living Chola Temples, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The premises are very well maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India
