We paid $2.50 each to see a movie that other parks would have included. We are visiting lots of NPs right now and this was a first
Another first: five staff behind the desk. Talk about over staffed! Drain the swamp.
And start in MI.
The historical significance was explained very well and this was a nice stop after Put in Bay to tie some of the War of 1812 together.

Very nice, and free, museum. The movie, about 25 minutes, was well done and a nice summary of events in the battle. The staff member Nicholas, Nicholas, was very pleasant, engaging and informative. In only an hour you can feel you have learned a lot about this War of 1812 battle.

River Raisin NBP was the main reason for my little road trip. I'm trying to get to all the NPS sites I can and this one is sort of close by. The Visitor Center is covid closed, but I walked around the building and checked out the few displays they have set up. I then walked out and did the loop trail around the fields. There are message boards set up where homesteads were, which is interesting. They have flags set up to show where the different battle participants where. The walk in the open field not that scenic and there are buildings and factories in view. Maybe they will plant some trees in the future to conceal the industrial landscape.
Back by the parking area, there is a nice pavilion set up for people to use and a lot of markers with interesting battle information. Read both sides of them. All in all, it's a good foundation to build upon, but it needs a little smoothing out. I did read that they may take over Fort Wayne in Detroit, which would give me enough reason to get up to that, and I did see the info board in Dundee about Macon Reservation.
Worth the trip and hopefully it gets a little TLC. It's a really interesting part of US history.

This is really interesting. The visitor's center is really awesome and growing. There is a movie to watch. And a very interesting warehouse space that is developing into a real nice walk thru experience for learning. It's still under construction and growing but it's really a fabulous set up and more than half finished. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and well spoken. He lead the morning walk thru the battlefield and the museum. Find out when the guided walking tour is, you'll get more out of it. We were traveling with the grandkids and didn't know what to except, but everyone enjoyed the visit.

We visited at about 10 in the morning. Only a few people at the visitor center. The park rangers were very friendly and helpful. They have two videos. We saw the older one because the room with the new one was being used. The video we saw was 15 minutes long and was very informative. Lots of areas to hike, but we just went to the area recommended by the ranger. All in all a good experience.

I visited the River Raisin National Battlefield Park for the first time last weekend. This park has a ton of potential once the National Park Service has this site fully up and running. I have read the process take up to eight years. Being a huge fan of National Parks, I am very excited to live within thirty minutes of here. I plan to visit this park a couple of times a year to check on the progress. As of right now, the Visitor Center is only open during the Summer, except on January 22nd of every winter (which is the anniversary of the battle).
If you are planning on visiting, I would recommend doing it during the summer. The Visitor Center will be open and their is a paved walking trail with markers describing the battle. Also, you will be able to take advantage of the paved walking/bike path to/from Sterling State Park past other historical markers from the battle.

This is a great historical site for a afternoon visit. Most people don't seem to know the historical significance of this area or the battle that took place there. A great way to learn about it without a big commitment. There is a short movie, small museum, etc.

I took my 10 year old grandson to the River Raisin National Battlefield Park and I saw his eyes become as big as a saucer.....he could grasp and understand the seriousness of the subject matter of the war.....his interest became more intense when the Ranger did the map show ......during the question answer part of the program.....he asked some excellent questions.....this quality of time I spent with my Grandson opened my eyes .....I for one will be bringing Aidan back as the years progress at the park.......Monroe is very fortunate to have this National Park in our area.

My family and I visited the River Raisin National Battlefield Park on our recent visit to Michigan. We enjoy history so we thought it looked like an interesting place to stop.
The visitor center is in a sizable building. It has a large hands-on area that is great for children and explains how life was in 1813 when the battle took place here. We learned while we were there that the River Raisin Battle was one of the worst losses for the US in the War of 1812. About 20% of US soldiers killed in battle during the War of 1812 were killed at River Raisin. There is a film in the Visitor Center that is very helpful in presenting what took place leading up to and during the battle. There is also a large model of what the area looked like in 1813. It was all very interesting.
Since the battle was over 200 years ago the area where the battle took place is developed and is basically a part of the city of Monroe, MI. The land around the visitor center does not make it easy to picture where the battle took place. However, the visitor center itself is very good. We enjoyed our visit and I can recommend the River Raisin Battlefield Park.

Nice to see the history about the area; very nice staff. Cute little museum shop as well. Nice outdoor area as well. Worth the trip to see and there's no admission; just a small donation box. Great to see the history behind the river and the community.

How much time does it take to see the visitor center and movie? If we allotted 1 hr prior to the battlefield walking tour, would that be enough time?
