Emmet County owns the historic McGulpin Point Lighthouse, which protected shipping on the Straits of Mackinac against storms, fog and rocks between 1869 and 1906. It was purchased by the county in 2008, which reopened McGulpin to the public with a gala celebration on May 30, 2009. The site is approximately 10 acres and is a half mile north of the Headlands. It includes 336 feet of shoreline on the Straits with a commanding view of the Mackinac Bridge. Trail to the Straits includes new interpretive signage coming in Summer 2015! Beautifully maintained grounds and interior. There is always something new at McGulpin Point!

This is a very short drive from Mackinaw City (prob like 10-min) and was a very nice lighthouse. Beautiful views of the bridge from atop lighthouse .. self guided tour and nice gift shop. The grounds are meticulously manicured and beautiful.

This lighthouse was free to visit and we were able to climb the tower to view the lake. Easy to get to and personnel were pleasant and talkative. We enjoyed rambling around the grounds.

Finally found this beautiful lighthouse. Climbed to the tower for a lovely view of the lake and bridge. Good history of shipwrecks too.

It won't take you too, too long to get through this place... But it was fun. You can see where the family lived, climb to the top of the light house, and later can walk down to the shore. The staff was incredibly friendly. We...More

DO NOT miss this one. Lighthouse is lovely. The views are spectacular. And the gift shop is one-of-a-kind. I don't like to buy clothing with the city/POI all over it. They had such beautiful, tasteful items with just the Great Lakes on them. Wonderful children's...More

Walk to the stairway to the top of the lighthouse and go enjoy the breeze and the view of Mackinac Strait. It's interesting and only requests donations. Definitely worth a trip.

Great stop. Loved the building and period antiques. Short hike to the water was nice too. Can be seen in about a half hour. Donation is worth it as site is free.

They absolutely can!! Only requirement is an adult stay with them. They will have NO trouble getting out onto the deck at the top of the tower, that's for sure. Take some time to walk the trail down to the lake. That was an... More
