This is an iconic Lighthouse of Lake Huron. You are lucky enough to get close to photograph this lighthouse when you arrive by any of the ferries. It makes a great photo if you can get a ferry with it's rooster tail in the foreground and the light house behind it. It's even better at sunset. One day I'll make it over to the island hopefully before it goes under water. With the Great Lakes rising it might not be too long before we lose it. It was also featured in the movie "Somewhere in Time".

We arrived to Mackinac Island late in the day; close to 5:00PM. After we checked into our hotel, we walked down Main Street to the green space next to a hotel.

We had a beautiful view of the lighthouse and also a good place to put our feet into the lake.

My wife and I have wanted to visit the older Light House set on the edge of Round Island for decades. I think possibly everyone who has ferry'd over to Mackinac has dreamt about it at least once. Now thanks to the efforts of the Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society, once a year you can make the journey. Previously, this location was difficult to access and provided external access only. Once a year in the second week of July, weather permitting, the Society in conjunction with Boy Scout Troop 323 of Freeland, Michigan and Halcyon Tours offer transport between and guided tours of Round Island Light as they continue their preservation and restoration efforts.

The Positives:
Access to Round Island proper from this location.

Rare Opportunity to visit the Light.

The Negatives:
The wait will be long. The boat over only holds six, so expect to stand in line for approximately 90 minutes regardless of when you arrive.

Expect to get wet!

No disability / youth access. The trip requires transferring from the charter boat to a rubber zodiac raft and back again, while both boats are pitching. Not for the faint of heart or those with mobility issues. Stairways and ladders within the structure may prove narrow and difficult to navigate for some.

Other Considerations:

There is a Charter fee (currently $15) for transport to the Island. This is in addition to any fee you may incur to transport to Mackinac Island (the charter leaves from the island, not the mainland).

Use the bathroom before you go.

If you want my humble opinion, I think it is somewhat ' silly ' to have this small lighthouse appear as an individual tripadvisor attraction. However it is very attractive and I shot seven photos of it both from the ferry and from the island.

Mackinac Island is one of the most gorgeous places on earth. And these lighthouses are little jewels in the crown. Yes, there is nothing more beautiful than nature, but in certain instances, man does things to actually improve it. I give you exhibit A.

The Round Island Lighthouse no longer functions in that capacity, but it is a good reminder of the importance of protecting boats and ships on their perilous journeys in the Straits of Mackinac. It sits on a breakwater that extends out from Mackinac Island and is a favorite photo shot for many amateur photographers as they approach the island.

The ferries pass close enough to get a great picture of this lighthouse and its definitely well worth the pic.

Beautiful lighthouse that really instilled an island feel during our stay. We left our curtains open at night just to see the beacon of light,.

You'll note that much of the "island" is now underwater due to the high lake levels, but still a great view from the island and from the ferries as you pass by

Unfortunately, the picture here is not of the Round Island Lighthouse. This is on the breakwater to the marina. But the Round Island lighthouse is iconic on its own.
