First half, great! Second half, questionable…
We truly enjoyed the first half of the carriage tour with our guide, Nathan! He had a great sense of humor and did his job so well. What I didn’t like was the up-charge for the very small butterfly house (which we skipped at $13 per person entry fee) or the second half of the tour, which is mostly through the woods. You only have 10 minutes to take in Arch Rock, and I felt the tour company needs to educate passengers more on how the tour ends. You can get off at the fort of a self-guided tour, walk down a short, steep hill back to the park/Main Street area, or circle back to downtown on carriage, but it takes an extra 30 minutes. With two small children in tow, we chose to walk down the hill but had to return to the tour’s ticketing booth to retrieve our stroller.

Great for an overview of the island!
First time we did the carriage tour in our 4 trips to the island. We learned so much!! Great for those who can’t walk or bike the island. Our tour guide, Carmina, was amazing! They work from a script, but she really personalized it for us! We saw so much that we never discovered on our own.

    Do it- worth the price!
Gage was our tour guide for the second half of the tour and he was great! Very informative, funny, and interactive. I want to say our first half guide, was Emily, and she was very informative and answered a lot of our questions! This is great way to see the Grand hotel, stables, Arch Rock, Fort Mackinac, State Park and cemetaries! There's a lot to see and this is fabulous if you struggle with walking long distances, going up or down hills or you have littles that just need a break. They offer a couple hop on and offs to spend a few minutes for photo ops and a pit stop at Arch Rock! I would suggest adding the Butterfly Garden to your ticket, it's a nice break and you can stretch out, walk around the Grand Stable and enjoy amazing views, and grab a quick snack before jumping on the second half of your trip!

    Ride with small dog
We took tour wii small Yorkie and my wife was nervous but went great. Our 2 young lady drivers were great, fun and informative. Appears they treat horses well and great way to see island other than ride bikes.

    The Carriage Tours
The carriage experience was great. I would have rated it 5 stars with the exception of our first guide Hannah. She was rude to others and condescending. I would like to see this company review her service. We did have an exceptional guide Lindsey with 2 liberal arts degrees on our second round with the 3 team carriage. She was fantastic and knowledgeable! The tour with the historic places and grounds are wonderful.

    Very Enjoyable Group Tour
Mackinac Island Carriage Tours provides several types of carriage tours. We chose to take a 1 hour 45 minute group tour by large horse-drawn carriages that transport patrons through town, up to Surrey Hill, through the park, and then back to/close to town with stops along the way. Walking down Main Street, we found the Mackinac Island Carriage Tours ticket booth near the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau (with restrooms nearby). We chose our option, purchased tickets, and joined the organized queue at the carriage. The tour has two distinct parts. Two horses pull the carriage which transports up to 20 people through historic downtown and up to Surrey Hill. Along the way, the driver identifies sites and tells some history and interesting facts. We stopped by Grand Hotel for a view. Everyone departs the carriage at Surrey Hill for a break, snacks, gift shops, and carriage exhibits. We could spend as much or as little time there as we wanted. At arrival, a photographer takes photos of the carriage group that may be purchased minutes later inside the building. The second part of the tour utilizes a larger carriage for up to 35 patrons drawn by 3 horses. Patrons who purchase the option for Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory are dropped off; they will board a different carriage later to continue the tour. The tour goes up to the island cemetery and through Mackinac Island State Park with a short stop at Arch Rock. Those who want to stop for Fort Mackinac can get off and then board a later carriage. Finally, we were offered three options to end the tour: stepping off at a spot for a short walk back to town; getting off at Grand Hotel; or ride back to Surrey Hill and take a smaller carriage back to Main Street. The carriage tour experience was great for us since it took us to areas we wanted to see and gave us a firsthand sense of the island layout for explorations on other days. The carriage drivers were all great -- good with the horses, good guides, and very personable. We made sure to tip each driver for their good service.

Great way to see highlights especially if you have mobility issues
We were able to buy tickets as soon as we got off ferry. About a 45 min wait which gave us time to do some shopping. Excellent tour guides…very knowledgeable and funny. I would skip butterfly garden that was an extra $10. Enjoyed stops along the way. Good way to see a lot without having to walk a lot!!

    Take the tour
This was an excellent tour. Our driver was very entertaining and knows everything about the island, both historically and present day. He is a wonderful storyteller and answered everyone's questions fully and with humor. The tour goes by all the spots that I was interested in. The seats were surprisingly comfortable. Probably the best thing I did on the trip.

    Awesome value and great experience
Jamie and Geoff (front and back of the tour) were awesome... Knowledgeable and helpful and happy to answer questions I had, which were many... Excellent value all around and better than walking everywhere. Geoff is especially funny and offers "pro tips" on Mackinac, and some on marriage, if you ask ;) If you book a private tour, ask for him!

Informative, funny carriage ride with Geoff (and the Waffles!)
We had Geoff as a tour guide when we were on the island in August. I have been heading to the island since I was a little girl and we actually have a family member who lives there, so I thought I knew all the things… Geoff gave us info that I didn’t know and was quite funny doing so. We had a group of ten of us, including small children and he kept all of our attention, gave awesome tidbits and kept us laughing. Would absolutely recommend a tour with him and will absolutely do another with him as a guide! Well done!

Just a heads up. If you've taken the tour before you will notice some changes. They do not change to a larger carriage once you get to the top of the hill. You will stay in the carriage you get into in town... and they are cramped. My suggestion is if you have more than 3 adults tell them you are in a different family group as they will attempt to cram entire families into one seating section. Another change is if you get off to tour the Fort you're not allowed to reboard a later carriage. You must walk to town from the Fort. Also the guide is a little hard to understand as she is talking into a microphone through a mask. Otherwise an interesting and entertaining tour...still recommended as it is the best way to get an overview of the island.

Thus tour is expensive. It’s not worth the money. The carriage will pick you up in downtown Mackinac City and take you to an ill-kept building where you will be transferred to another larger carriage. On the way from town our driver, Captain Morgan, stopped a few times to rest the horses and point out curio shops and coffee bars. His penchant to market cheesy shops and avoid meaningful historical and architectural information was disappointing. In addition, he would literally scream, screech and whistle in his microphone while telling lame jokes. That was very annoying. When we reached the transfer point, we had to wait almost an hour to continue the tour because they do not dispatch a carriage until they have enough riders to fill the next carriage. The second part of the tour was a leisurely trip through the state park to Arch Rock and the Fort. At least our driver, Garret, was knowledgeable and spent time pointing out historical and architectural points of interest. To be honest, you can more cost-effectively see the same points of interest and have time to visit each if you rent a bicycle or a scooter at any one of the many rental shops around town.

The first part of the tour was great as we strolled through town. They get you up to the stables and have to switch carts. After flattening a penny we preceded to the second part of the tour which was a carriage ride through the woods where the tour guide essentially talked about himself and taking Kid Rock and some state senators on a tour. Made for a nice afternoon nap.

We requested a taxi service since it was raining and we have a disabled companion who couldn't walk far distances. We asked to be dropped in the Port for the ferry so we could go to the mainland. Our driver Conner asked if we wanted to go to the Fort Mackinac but my aunt right away clarified Port, going as far as spelling it out. Eventually, he asked use to squish to fit more passengers. Later on, he stopped by the Starline Port to get more passengers, we were about to go down but he told us not to go down yet because the Shepler port was still ways down. We were so tired so we didn't quite notice we were getting too far from the port, thinking he was taking an unconventional or scenic route. Eventually, we realized that he brought us to Fort Mackinac. Wanting to clear the confusion, we kindly asked to be brought to Port, willing to pay the necessary fair charge for our family of 8. He told us that he earned money from tips therefore we should go down the hill and walk instead so he can get more passengers who would tip him. Mind you, we have a disabled passenger who would have a hard time walking down the hill. Still he insisted we leave. Later on down the hill, we see him by the port without passengers taunting my minor cousin as she walked down the street. The unprofessional behavior of Conner is not only a reflection of his greed but also apathy towards my disabled family member. I would rather walk, rent a bike, or hail a small company taxi than see Conner ever again.

We decided to take a Carriage Tour while on the island. The front ticket window does not open until exactly 9 00, but there are multiple carriages waiting if you get there early so your wait isn't too long. The only issue I had was during this Covid time, they pack the carriages with visitors too closely. They want to fill an entire row, but I think there needs to be more distancing during this time. There is a plastic that seperate the rows, but I think they should not be trying to fill each row up so tightly during these times. That being said, the tour was fun. Our 1st driver was engaging and funny. You can't hear real well even though they have a microphone, probably because of the plastic. We were dropped off at Surrey Hill to look around gift shop and get refreshments. The donuts at the refreshment stand were warm and the best we have ever had. Our 2nd driver was quirky and funny and honestly was so knowledgeable about the area. Even when in the woods, he gave interesting information about the trees, and woods and the sites along the way. If you do nothing else on the island, you have to take a Carriage Tour. Its about 1 1/2 hours and well worth seeing the entire island. The Carriage Tour will drop you at the end of the tour to the Fort in case you want to visit that as well. Would highly recommend this, but would caution the Tours to maybe not pack so many people on during this Covid time.

We enjoyed a 1 hr private tour with Kristian and even though we've been on the Island many times, we always learn something new. It was a very romantic and relaxing way to spend an hour and at $160, not terrible for island prices. I would suggest booking in advance as we reserved this tour at 10:30 am that day and the next available private tour was at 3:30 pm. It worked out well for our dinner plans but I also wish there evening tour options. We called around and it seems most carriage tours end by 5 pm.

We were incredibly impressed with the carriage operations provided by Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. All of the taxi drivers we encountered were very friendly and willing to answer questions. Additionally, the tour guide we were privileged with (Bob) was a wealth of intricate historical knowledge regarding the island. It is impressive and telling that the same family (Chambers) has managed this operation for so many generations. The horses are truly an incredible sight and provide a special significance to the island experience. I would recommend anyone visiting the island to take advantage of their carriage services.

We immediately went to the carriage tours after arriving on the island on the advice of a native Michigander. It was a good tour with two college kids narrating and handling the horse teams. It was the typical cheesy joke narrative with some history and fun facts thrown in. The ride went through the forest and the highlight was the arch. It seemed expensive at $36 per person, yet it was a good way to get a flavor of the island before hitting the restaurants and tourist shops.

First of all I thought a private tour would allow you to customize what you wanted to see. Not so. When I tried to book the hour tour I was told that it would not include arch rock so I booked the hour and half for $240. Our driver was full of himself and although having driven for several years did not give many facts. Also he talked so low that the person in the back seat could barely hear him. Never went to the fort. Went by a church so fast we could not get a good view. The tour probably would have been ok if we had another driver. A complete waste of $240. I wanted to do the private tour as we were on the island for one night. There were three of us and all three were very disappointed.
