About
The State Theatre has been a fixture in downtown Kalamazoo since 1927. The original founder of the theatre was Colonel William Butterfield. John Eberson was the renowned architect who designed the theatre. In line with theatre design conventions of the era, the idea was to create a unique atmospheric effect. The early roots of the theatre were found in the Vaudevillian tradition of performance. Many acts that frequented the State Theatre included opera, dramas, big bands, ballet, dance reviews, stage shows and movies.

Nate Bargatze concert was amazing! Loved the theater. Even though we had 3rd row seats; which were fancy folding chairs, for better comfort, choose something 6th-10th row or the balcony. Because those are theater seats. I’m sure they are all a good view of the stage. Within walking distance of some fun restaurants and pubs. Also inexpensive parking lots right next to the theater. I think we paid $4.00.

This beautifully restored 1927 theater provides a wonderful venue for two different Michigan bands. T6he view from the balcony was terrific.

This theater is beautiful upkept and restored. It is small enough that literally every seat is a good seat. We have been to several concerts and events here and we always enjoy it. The usually have a little bar for adult beverages at the breaks with a nice set of choices. If you have not been be sure to go to an upcoming concert or other stage event. Parking is easy in the garage or we nearly always find street parking for free. Plenty of restaurants nearby, on the outdoor walking mall.

Although we loved the actual event, I would never go to another event at this theater which is not ADA accessible. If there is more than 9 inches from your knee to your thigh, you will not be comfortable in any balcony seat in this theater. The lighting is downright dangerous for older people, there are no railings to hold onto in the balcony, and the steps are different steepness. Probably an okay venue for anyone under 50, but if you are over 50, overweight at all, or have hip or knee issues (LOTS of stairs, no elevator), I would reconsider.

This theater transported me back in time to a great place in history. The decor was amazing. We sat in the balcony and had a great view. It doesn't seem there would be a bad seat in the house. It's cool that there is a dance floor for folks to enjoy during concerts.

Most of the people are very nice and always be happy healthy and beautiful . I am travelling from India to USA from Haridwar to visit my daughter & her beautiful & very naughty kid. The town is very clean & occupied with lots of educated Indian family.

Went there about a year ago for a concert and was glad I did. Not modern in anyway, but has a very warm feel with great acoustics

The Kalamazoo State Theatre is a wonderful place to enjoy a concert, as my husband and I recently did. We don't go there enough, and need to make an effort to enjoy this local gem of a venue more often. Usually we are able to obtain seats in the lower level, but this time we purchased late and opted for the upper level for seating. The upper level seating is very cramped for leg room. We are not tall people, so it must be even more uncomfortable for taller individuals. In the future if we can not obtain seating where there is more leg room, we will not attend for that reason. If not for the cramped leg room, this venue would have rated an excellent.

The State Theatre gives you a much smaller venue to see big name performances. The aesthetics are wonderful! The theatre appears to be a formal concert hall but it is NOT. People dance in the aisles and for the rock-n-roll or country-western shows. Patrons might stand for an entire song. Clapping and singing along seem to be common as well. My biggest complaint (probably a positive attraction for many) is that the theater sells alcohol before and DURING performances. I found it extremely distracting to have people getting up and coming back to their seats throughout the entire concert. Some are careless or become tipsy and will spill their beverages on the floor and on seated attendees! If the casual atmosphere doesn't bother you, you will see fantastic concerts!! We saw Jonny Lang and Brian Setzer Christmas concert this year. Both were outstanding!!!
