'Truly One Of A Kind
Jul 2020
I love historical museums, many differ from one another in certain elements, but the Historic Ironwood Depot Museum is a cut above the rest. Museums typically focus on topics such as farming, schooling, frontier life, logging, Native American culture… but the Ironwood Museum is a composite of local history, railroading, and mining. And let’s face it – you cant find iron mines just anywhere. Yes, Ironwood oozes mining culture with parks and mural memorials on walls of buildings and in natural settings. The detail of the murals is of exceptional artwork as you look into the pale complexion of the pasty faced miners who once walked the earth. Now, you can look at them and feel their personality coming to life as you stare at their clothes, posture, body language, and facial expressions. That alone is reason enough for visiting Ironwood, Michigan. And so it is with the Depot Museum as you pull up and look at the carving of the miners made from the stump of the massive once living tree. And as for the depot itself, why, it looks like it could come alive and serve train riders tomorrow. Oh, the roof needs to be replaced but the rest of the building is in exceptional shape for its age. Inside are very good displays with thought provoking photos, a manual railroad switch control, ‘the Bell… oh, what a great place. And let’s not forget their fabulous newsletters and the staff of that great place. Yes, the Depot Museum is truly one of a kind.

The visit that did not happen
Sep 2019
Had checked it out online before arriving. Info on the Web said it opened at noon. Timed our schedule so our arrival would be just prior to opening. Took a few outdoor photos then walked to the entrance. Attached to the sign that stated their hours ( open at noon ) , was another note that stated " back around 1:30 pm. So, that pretty much sums up our highlight of our visit to Ironwood. No, we did not hang around to see if someone would actually show at 1:30.

Wonderful experience
Jul 2019
We went with our 9 & 10 year old. We all learned SO much. We got our own "private" tour by one of the volunteers and was able to answer our kids questions in way they could understand.

Lots of Information!
May 2019 • Family
I stopped at the depot to see about getting pamplets of area events for a binder to put in our friends Air BNB. There were so many pamphlets and trail maps! The building is a wealth of information about the city, businesses and vacation attractions. Look for the hours as I stopped and just happened to catch someone there during off hours and they let me in to browse, which I'm grateful for.

A great historic building reminding us of when the trains came to Ironwood. This building needs a new roof, so please donate for the cause.

Thank you for your comment. The Ironwood Area Historical Society is looking for funding to restore the Depot's 32-year old roof. We are 20% toward our goal of $85,000. With a donation to the Historical Society of $100, a Commemorative Brick will be inscribed with your message dedicated to friends or family. Stop by the Depot to see the many Commemorative Bricks already in place on the east side of the platform. If you are interested in your own brick, please contact us and we will send you a Commemorative Brick application. Thank you.

Beautiful old theater
Aug 2018 • Business
I work a lot of old theaters and there are more than most probably realize that have been fully or partially restored and are still operational. This place is a gem in the middle of a small town struggling to stay alive with the remaining job market becoming more and more slim. The local community banded together to produce live entertainment for itself and the tourists. They have done a remarkable job with so few resources and volunteer labor. Kudos to them and their benefactors. I wish them continued success. To my fellow entertainment brethren I would encourage you to do your part when approached by this theater. Work with them. Give a little on your pricing and possibly sacrifice some amenities to keep the spirit alive.

Thank you for your review. A Depot Museum is a special place in time. Ironwood's is just that! We are lucky to have this historic structure to use as a gathering place in the summer months for community activities. Join us for August's First Friday when Ironwood based singer/storyteller Bill Jamerson will perform songs and stories about iron miners and lumberjacks at the Depot Park on Friday, July 13 between 4-6 p.m.

Nice history

It’s a great lite place to understand and start the Iron Belle bike trail in summer. Now still closed due to snow. The current trail is paved for 7 miles with great interpretations. Something to do with family and friends
