Historical building and interesting exhibits!

Glad to have the chance to visit the museum, with throw-back memories of my own hometown Carnegie library. The museum currently have a cool exhibit of old postcards as well as display of basalt rocks and paintings by a local artist. The real star, however, is the building itself, which dates back to the early 20th century.

Has some interesting parts

What we found most interesting was the collection of postcards of Houghton stretching bag to its early days. We would love to find out more of the history of Houghton/Hancock but nowhere really covers that kind of info

This is a small museum about Houghton and the Keweenaw area, located in the former library building. It was nice and informative about the history of the city of Houghton, much of it even more recent history related to the university. We thought it was interesting and were glad we stopped in. There is no entrance fee, just voluntary contributions are accepted. The museum is a work in progress and I'm sure will be expanding in the future. History professors and students at MTU are actively working on expanding the info in this museum. One particularly fascinating part is a project called the Kett Explorer App that involves viewing historical town maps of the area on a computer screen and allows people who know information about the old buildings, to enter the info. And Kett Explorer App allows you to look at the same area of the historical map in a modern satellite view. Pretty cool!

Wonderful to see these old Carnegie libraries! Brings back so many wonderful memories for those of us who grew up visiting Carnegie libraries in our respective home towns.

What to say. The Carnegie Museum in Houghton was closed for some renovations when we visited it. So I shot some photos of the exterior of the museum to assist others who may want to see it and visit it. It certainly looks authentic and is in a very historic looking building.

Nice place to stop

Generally, few tourists venture to this "neck of the woods." Most are passing through to/from Isle Royale. When doing so, this is a great place to get a good flavor of the local history in the area, which is quite distinguishing. Though the glory days of copper mining in Keweenaw are likely long gone, maybe some day it'll be great again. Carnegie holds many of the lessons of yore. Go find out when in town.

A different type of Museum.

The building itself is amazing, massive red stone, impressively sitting at the top of a steep hill, two floors and still in great condition for it's age. Down stairs are exhibits/information rooms. The 'museum' is upstairs but do not expect a typical one. the room is one open large room with wood floors and built-ins. The exhibits give you a look into the town as it started and grew. The staff is friendly and helpful. Shouldn't take you more than 20-30 minutes. No fee. Not especially good for younger kids/teens unless they have a love of history and 'the old'.

Interesting look into the culture of Houghton

A small cultural museum, tracing the history and culture of Houghton over the last 70 years through photos, narratives, a few exhibits and posters. Wonderful old building repurposed.

There is not much at this museum as of May 2016. Took approx 10 minutes to look at everything. It is worth the trip just to see the building.

Carnegie charm, local history and local flavor
May 2016 • Family
Small town local Carnegie museum still working hard. They have great displays and last Thursday a fun fundraiser with BYOB. Can it get any better?! The helpful staff will show you the back rooms and interesting aspects which make this building a treasure of the UP. Good parking nearby.
