This is an original Native Trail from Little traverse Bay which goes up the shoreline through Cross Village to to the top west side of the State. There is a white painted line to mark the edge of the pavement and just grass, brush, and forest. It is not really a 2 lane paved road but has space for about one and a half cars, no dividing line, no drainage ditches, no bike lane, and no shoulder to pull over on. The road is sloped slightly away from the center in a rounded crest style which prevents water from accumulating in most areas during wet weather. For these reasons, large vehicles, campers, and trailers are difficult to pass on the opposing traffic side, so be very careful! It's basically 22 or more miles with no passing zone. In good weather with little traffic it is possible to go maybe 45 mph safely, but with traffic, motorcycles, and bikes, it is more reasonable to be doing more like 25 or 30. In most places there is no guard rail and a 200 foot sand dune on limestone bluff drops off near the side of the road on the west side. All this being said it is just a beautiful ride, winding along like the native trail that inspired this road, traveling up the coast through some gorgeous nature preserve lands and past several of beautiful log cabins. There are some private summer estates that look out across the lake toward Beaver and Garden Islands in the distance. Sunsets are breathtaking, and the slow churn of the big waves rolling by is peacefully hypnotizing. Mid to late fall is a knockout of color and scenery. Winter is spectacular with snow drifts and ice flows on the lake. Spend some time slowly rolling by and take a moment to explore and treasure one of the most amazing places in this wonderful Northern Country.

Beautiful adventure driving thru the Tunnel of Trees just before dusk October 2, 2020. We drove from Cross Village to Spring Harbor. Colorful trees, sunset of Lake Michigan was spectacular, beautiful homes, wildlife grazing in the open fields - this was such a relaxing road trip. Highly recommend. I’m sure it’s something beautiful to experience in every season.

Beautiful drive. We took our time driving through but needed to pull over a few times to let others pass. This is a very narrow road and not only are there others viewing the scenery but those that live on this road. We went the second week of October and the leaves were in full color. There are many great views of Lake Michigan but unfortunately not many places to walk out to see the view.

Took my partner for a long drive up the Michigan coast and it is a worthwhile ride. The road is very narrow so if you have a large SUV I would suggest you skip the tour, but otherwise it is a fun afternoon driving along Lake Michigan's western coastline. There are few places to stop for food and no gas stations along the way, so be prepared before you launch off on the trip. This is probably not a great afternoon if you don't like unspoiled forest land, but if you appreciate the rugged outdoors, this will fascinate you.

This attraction is similar to the Smoky Mountain National Park.
Why?
You have to be lucky enough “to hit the date”.
During our stay in the area, trees just started to change the colors. I knew, that they need couple more weeks to be in the “Fall Beauty stage”.
Anyway it’s worth to drive whole 20 miles through this “tunnel”.
It’s nice even if it’s green.
I recommend this place.
When you drive from south to north, at the end of the tunnel, there is Cross Village with its famous Leg’s Inn Restaurant.
You can combine these two attractions together.

I bugged my family for years that I wanted to see the Tunnel of Trees. And to tell you the truth, I can only imagine the beauty of this drive in the fall... It must be spectacular. The views in November were gorgeous. The lake can be seen along the way and there were plenty of locations to stop and take gorgeous pics. A country store was a hit. The children loved seeing a more relaxed and country aspect high above the water. This is definitely a trip to do again... but at the peak of color in the fall. Don't miss it. It's a gorgeous drive.

We found the Tunnel of Trees disappointing. It is a road lined with trees, but actual tunnel effect is pretty brief. We did enjoy lunch at Legs Inn in Cross Village, sitting in the garden with a beautiful view of Lake Michigan, so all was not lost.

This is a beautiful drive. We were traveling from the Mac bridge to Traverse city. This is a 20 mile drive through the woods and along the lakes shore at times. It begins in Harbor Springs off 31 and ends at “the famous Legs Inn” (great Polish food) it is a winding road that is about a car and 1/2 wide. Harbor Springs, Charlevoix. Petosky, Elk Rapids are all lakeside towns worth visiting.

I expected the tunnel of trees to be amazing in early October with fall color... nope. No real fall color to speak of but it was a kinda cool drive. Lots of twists & turns with a few beautiful views of the lake. We drove about 45 mins out of the way for this and i thought it wasn't worth it. If you are going to be in the area already, then its worth a drive through.

We checked out M-119’s Tunnel of Trees which is a 16-mile scenic road that begins in Harbor Springs and ends in Cross Village. It is very overrated and did not really see 137 curves they advertised but it was quite impressive when I saw the drone video advertisement on the internet.

To add negative experience, many tourist cabins and locals placed big stones on the shoulder of the road so that cars can not stop and take photos of somewhat decent views and curves on the way. Narrow road and busy traffic too.

Don't waste your time here, go up to Upper peninsula, views are 100% better than here.
