Logging in the Mason Tract
Dec 2019 • Solo
Recent logging has been devastating to portions of Mason Tract Pathway. Having seen forestry management plans for the area in the past, I understood that a buffer zone was to be kept between the trail and the logging operations. This was not followed and there are areas of clear cuts on both sides of the trail. I wanted to discuss this with the region’s forester, but cannot get her to return a call.

Beautiful trail!
Oct 2019 • Friends
Just hiked the Mason Tract trail that is called Thayer Loop - about 7.2 miles I believe. It was absolutely stunning scenery and a lovely, well-marked and maintained trail. However, we were very surprised to find hunters alive the way. We passed three groups of men with rifles. I questioned them and they said “it’s public lands.” We were both wearing bright colors so we carried on and made sure to shout when we heard gunshots. Very unnerving however. I would have expected to see a sign at the trailhead warning of hunting season or something.

We didn't get to spend much time here. However, the time we did spend walking through the woods here, was nice. I'd go back.

Hiking Trail beauty
Aug 2017 • Couples
The Mason Tract is a tract of thousands of acres set aside for complete immersion in a stretch of beautiful river country. The hiking trail took us up along the AuSable river.
Wonderful scenery, saw some wild turkeys, deer and a couple bald eagles.
Quiet and meditative. Depending on the time of year, bring your bug spray.

The Mason tract is a beautiful natural forest Scenic Road that follows the South Branch of the Au Sable river from Roscommon North. A great place for hiking bird-watching nature and of course trout fishing in fly fishing on the Au Sable river

Beautiful classic ski trail
Jan 2017 • Couples
This is a picturesque quiet ski trail along the Au Sable river. There are some long gradual downhill runs but overall the trail is fairly easy to manage. The scenery is remarkable and there is a gentleness to the entire area.

Quiet retreat
Oct 2016 • Couples
This is a well kept pathway. Very secluded and quiet. The path along the river is soothing and restful. It would have been nice to spend more time there.
