We went walking in the woods along this lake. It was pretty nice. My family and I liked the woods more than the lake.

Great location to spend the day!

Took two of my boys with me to check the area out I've read about it and see the sign every time I go to Mio. Wow it is beautiful several beaver ponds and marshes to explore and look for wildlife. We saw several different woodpeckers and saw a couple muskrats. The main lake really surprised me also it's a big lake I can't wait to drag the canoe back and explore the lake. The maps on the trails were exelent had no problems, actually 11 yr old did the map reading and decided which trails we would take. So was real proud how well read the map and together used their compasses to make sure we were going right direction. At the campground the bathroom was super clean and had nice bearproof trash cans. The campsite were dry and grassy, newer picnic tables and fire pits. I have hammocks and the sites had plenty treees for hanging hammocks so looking forward to camping. For trail runners nice wide solid trails a few sandy areas but not many we passed a few runner the day we hike it. Now that we live in grayling area I'll be using these trail a lot really enjoyed it.

@bassmaster2000 re Catch and Release

Thanks for the grin! re your recital of the "Party Line" concerning C&R fishing. Our differences aside, the real draw is quiet solitude uninterrupted by boat launch comedy acts, power boats, jeeps and orvs. In general, fuel / power burning modern NOISY crutches to lean on. Some of us enjoy the squeaking oar lock (even though we mentally curse it!) I don't think anybody is hiking clear back in there just to accumulate an impressive numbered fish count.

Really lovely lake on National Forest land!

I read some of the other reviews & some people just missed the whole point of a "catch & release" lake. The reason someone can catch 35 bass is because this lake is protected. Yes, if you want a fish dinner, you'll be disappointed, but, if you want to commune with nature & enjoy catching big bass, bigger pike, & 10 inch (or bigger blue gills or sunnies), you'll love this beautiful, peaceful lake! Add to that the experience of having a loon with 2 babies on its back swim past you, a bald eagle swoop down to the water & fly off with a nice fish, or an eagle chase an osprey around until the osprey drops its fish & the eagle swoops down to grab the fish, it is so special!! I've seen it all from my float. The hike in is less than 1/2 mile, an easy walk even for my husband & I who are in our 60s & carry our floats, waders, & swim fins on our backs. As we near the lake, my heart soars & all stresses of the modern world melt away. There are no cottages or cabins on the lake, no motors or jet skis, no sounds @ all, except the calls of loons & the voice of a fisherman's "Fish on!" or "Woohoo!" as his efforts are rewarded. When I leave @ the end of the day, my hands smell like fish & I know it's been a great day on Wakely Lake!

Great scenery

This is a great property. It has stunning scenery to explore through a variety of trails that take your through forests, meadow openings, and wetlands. Good for birdwatching. Saw a pair of loons with chicks and a pileated woodpecker among other things. Only complaint is that there is no trail map indicating difficulty or length of segments. Instructions for self-pay day fees could have been clearer.

Boring, Only losers fish here
Jun 2016 • Family
So boring!!! catch and release fishing is for people who don't know how to fish. Over a mile hike in for a catch and release pond REALLY ? When I went, I meet some of the weirdest people, they like fishing there because the have no skills. This young dude was like I caught 35 bass today.... WOW you caught 35, Like OMG the lake is flipping Catch and Release, No skill is required to catch the bass in this lake. This is a lake for losers that don't know how to fish ! !!!!

We hiked Wakely for the first time, after skiing it many years before. It's a wonderful place in either mode.

Dont go

This place is not so good, first you have to pay to park. Yea $5.00 per day to park at a federal park, the you have to walk about a mile before you get to the lake, I was not impressed.

A friend and I were searching for a place to swim over this Labor Day weekend while driving back from the U.P. We found Wakeley Lake by chance using google maps. It was an unforgettable experience and I will surely be returning. We bought inflatable tubes from the party store down the street and floated on the lake all day. We were the only people on the lake for 4 hours until we saw a family walking their dogs along the shore.

The water was warm, not too deep, and very smooth. We didn't see too many fish but there was a large bald eagle swooping over the lake which was incredible to witness. We decided after a long day of swimming that we would set up camp at one of the many sites. Not sure how many there are, but with no one around, we were free to choose.

Bottom line, Wakeley is a great place to relax on the water with a beautiful tree lined coast and no interruptions. 10/10
