Visting friends in Grand Rapids, we toured the Meyer May House (Frank Lloyd Wright) and then were brought to Downtown Market for lunch. What a great place! There's an excellent selection of foods among 12 dining options -- deli sandwiches to plated foods for take-out or for taking to the upstairs balcony seating/dining area. You'll have a hard time making up your mind from all the food possibilities here! There are grocery and specialty products purveyors to browse as well as beverage vendors and bakeries.
Bottom line, you'll have an excellent lunch or early diner here. Downtown Market is open 7 days a week from late morning until 7:00 or 8:00 p.m., depending on the day.

Definitely worth a visit for an enjoyable lunch or dinner!

This is a rather small market in an area of Grand Rapids that appears to be gentrifying. There are some really nice “shops”. Of course in this setting prices are high. The turnoff for me is that very few food service workers are wearing masks. In the current environment that is a no-no.

My wife and I went to the downtown market today and had a blast!! There is SO many things to try and amazing shops to check out! From the soda store with 100’s of different sodas to the meat and fish market. There is a French pastry and you can have poke’ made to order. Don’t even get me started on the spice store!!!! Being a cook I was in heaven!!!!! It was great to see all the different types of dinning and stores under one roof!! Definitely don’t pass this place up for an afternoon visit!

I stop here every time I am in Grand Rapids. Love Field and Fire, Fish Lads, the oil & vinegar place and a lot of the other restaurant stalls. Will continue to try a new place for lunch each time I visit. Haven not been disappointed yet. Having to pay for parking is annoying, but it is what it is.

I took a new person the the Downtown Market to show them all the business there. From Spices to Poke to a meat market and a French pastry business!! It is truly an amazing place. I had a bowl of Gumbo from the meat market there and it was very good!!! The flavor was spicy but not over powering.

The Downtown market is a beautiful space, the greenhouse upstairs was my dream venue for my dream wedding. Unfortunately, the team that runs the events there is absolutely clueless and rude. Their turnover rate for "event coordinators" should have been my first clue, as I started planning my wedding with a perfectly pleasant woman, only to find she didn't work there a few months later....
STRIKE 1: The week leading up to our wedding was when everything started to fall apart with the venue - first off, our beer order - which was submitted in early June (plenty of time to order summer beers, or so you'd think) Katie reached out to me the week before the wedding and explained that she dropped the ball on ordering what we had requested (Summer Shandy) in a timely manner and offered a substitute (Oberon), which was okay, but then even our substitute on the day of ended up being bottled beers, not kegs.
STRIKE 2: At our details meeting the Tuesday before my wedding, I went over the proper spelling of my husbands name with both coordinators SEVERAL times, as I know it's hard to spell and often misspelled, on the day of - the directional sign with our names on it was MISSPELLED. When my matron of ceremonies pointed this out, she was told "there was nothing that could be done, because that sign is printed through a special printer" - after 20 minutes of complaining, finally a new sign was printed.
STRIKE 3: We reviewed with the market in great detail that we didn't want shots served at our wedding, we were paying for our open bar ourselves and we don't like the rowdy crowd that serving shots can create...it was explained to me that the market has a policy against serving shots and I had nothing to worry about. Low and behold, that night I look around to see multiple guests doing shots.
STRKE 4: The market forces you to pay for "security" to watch the door to the building after 7:00 pm when the market closes, you'd think this security would protect you from potential wedding crasher's - you'd be wrong. I personally had to ask three separate parties of crasher's to leave my wedding reception. Also, when we signed our contracts it was explained that the market is open to the public until 7:00 p.m. and has restaurants that stay opened later, but after 7:00 p.m. our party would be the only one in the main building - LIE. Apparently they recently opened up their third floor for events and hosted another wedding reception up there that evening and NEVER TOLD US. So that day when I showed up I found out we did NOT have the space to ourselves.
I realize that there are only 3 strikes in baseball, so I'll leave you with those four points. My final statement being this; the worst part of all the interactions I've listed in this review is that the person in charge, Carrie is so rude, inconsiderate and callous, it seems that these behaviors are part of the culture that she's created for this venue and her team. Any wedding planning process that involved her or her team was painstaking every step of the way. I just hope this review can help future brides avoid the mistake of signing any contracts that might bind them to such terrible service, especially for such a special and important day.

One exit...20+ cars in line ahead of us trying to cash out at auto check out station....oh Humm. One of us had to get out to stop traffic to get out of parking spot. After waiting in line for more than 30 minutes it cost us an extra dollar for parking time. What a ripoff !!! On the plus side the inside market was interesting but we won't be returning.

The Downtown market is one of my favorite merchants to shop in Grand Rapids for delicious, artisanal foods! Whether it is take-out from Fish Lads/Carvers, Juju bird , Rak, Tacos El Cunado, or Pho616, Apertivo or Loves Ice Cream, or dine in at Social Kitchen or Slows - or a selection of the OUT OF THIS WORLD breads and pastries from Field and Fire - whatever you’re hungry for, you can’t go wrong and you will DEFINITELY be back! And during our stay at home order, they will deliver to your home or curbside right to your car - how easy is that?!! Fish Lads has super fresh fish and seafood to purchase for fixing at home - Carvers sells locally raised meat and did i mention Field and Fire??!!! Only the best bread, baguettes and pastries in Michigan!
