Nice spot for a walk about. Walking around the river is easy with the walk path that circles through the bridges and comes back around. The ladder isn’t your usual “ladder” but if your patient you will spot fish climbing upriver. Because I came during the chilly month of March, I didn’t get to partake in any fishing. But the river is full of brave souls who are fishing in the chilly waters. I seen many young lads catching big salmon! Great sight to see! There is one sketchy part of the area, the underpass of the bridges have bums living in it. So walking near these areas will result in being begged or just watched with leery looks. Over all nice area to stretch!

I love it when people have a vision that not only saves wildlife and habitat, it provides an interesting view of both. This is a very cool idea to help fish work their way upstream. I saw fish using it to get to higher levels but I wasn't sure how they got out of the final outlet. It was a bit clogged with trash and other debris. I wonder when it gets cleaned out.
Several people who are locals told me the city plans to get rid of it and they were upset about that. I don't know the whole story so I don't have an opinion. I just know it was interesting to see how it currently helps the fish.

I had never seen a Fish Ladder so insisted we visit while on a family visit to Grand Rapids. The Fish Ladder is in a small pocket park and is more of an art installation but If you have not seen it be sure to stop by it is near the down town area on the river. I was glad I bullied my family into taking me there.

Nice spot to fish. Also nice walk about that goes around through the bridges and back around. A lot of people use the walk way for running or biking. Suggest coming in Spring, because even though it’s March, there are really chilly gusts of wind. The underpass of the bridge is basically bumville. So be aware when walking through. Other than that, the River was very nice place to kill the time and enjoy the scenery.

Been there a million times, fun to watch the fish jumping the dams. A few men have fallen in with waders on, it can be dangerous. Just today someone was found on the grounds, dead, which is unusual for this area. It is mostly a very fun fall time to go and watch any day even when it get too cold to be there. I have loved it We even rode segways to the Fish Ladder on my birthday.

After a great day at the Ford Museum we walked up river on the walk way to the fish ladder and watched the persistent fish keep trying to get up stream. Some actually made it up the big jump on the river but the smaller ones kept trying on the ladder sometimes making it sometimes not. It does take patience (like a fisherman) to see them try it and each try is over in an instant but it was a lot of fun!

I think it was considered public art when built in 1970 - at least as iconic as our Calder - yet all this talk of returning the Grand River to its natural state (pre-Sixth Street Dam / regulator) makes me wonder what will happen to the Fish Ladder! No one mentions it and I would definitely hate to see it go. It played a part in my life as I grew up on the West Side and I've grown to like it even more with the improvements of Downtown Grand River parks over the years. See it before it's gone! Or write our officials and tell them how awesome it is and that we should keep it AS IS! :D

This is listed as Fish Ladder Park. There is a short walk to the river where you see the Fish Ladder Sculpture. There is also a large concrete seating area if you want to rest and watch the river. Fishing is allowed in the river. There are restrooms near the parking lot and an outdoor sink to clean up after fishing.

We thought it would be neat to go see with the kids but it wasn't worth the trip. The area is run down and dirty and the water around the ladders had a lot of trash in it.

We went to the fish ladder and it was cool. There weren't alot of fish trying to climb but there were some and they were big! We watched from the bottom and we finally went to the top and there was a couple feeding the fish with bread. There were tons of fish going for the bread. They shares a couple pieces with us to also feed the fish. It was cool.

When do the fish come in groups? The best time to visit to watch the migration?
Written August 13, 2019
I don't remember the best time to visit, we were there in June and you could see some fish but not a lot. It was also very flooded when we went so it depends on the weather as well.

Has anyone else looked up our humble Fish Ladder on Atlas Obscura? Listed as 'Fish Ladder Park' - I'm always so surprised when sites from my hometown pop up on AO. FUN!

I am on ohio.Where do you get a license to fish at the ladder and how much is it?
Written July 31, 2016
Licenses may be purchased at many hardware stores or Meijers, etc. Or you can go online at michigan.gov/dnr to make your purchase.
Non-resident annual licenses cost $68; 24-hrh license for $10 and 72-hr license for $30.
While you cannot fish in the "ladder" proper, you may fish in the river itself below the dam [which is why the ladder is there...to help the fish get above the dam] or from either bank of the river. Guys fish IN the water with waders [can be dangerous] or from boats in the river below the dam.

Can you go and see the fish anytime in the summer or is it over after spring?
Written June 12, 2016
I have been there at all different times of the year. There seems to be fish in the area almost all of the time. Hope that helps.
