Closed :(
Jun 2021
If we would have been able to go in, it may have gotten more than 3 stars. It was still closed, I believe due to COVID, so while you could see in, it would have been way better to actually go in. Maybe next time!

Great Oddity
Jul 2020 • Couples
It is hard to believe a couple stayed in the tiny space for several summers. It was closed MSU’s to Covid, but you could look through the windows and get the mandatory photo.

A surprise you didn't see coming
Sep 2019
I take a picture at this place every time that I'm in Grand Marais, but it wasn't until this past fall that it was open for us to explore the inside. The history in this building was actually pretty impressive. There was a lot to learn about the house, and the area it was from and where it's at now. It was a lot bigger inside than I expected. Don't miss going upstairs, there's a neat surprise in store up there. I'm very happy I got to tour this building finally and the next time it's open, I'll be back exploring again. I'm sure I'll see some stuff I missed, because there is a lot.

If you have problems with small tight places, it might get to you, and the you will feel it upstairs.

A Unique, Weird Sideshow Attraction
Jul 2019
It's a house shaped (mostly) like a barrel. They cheated by adding a kitchen as an extension, but that's what it is. It was built by a cartoonist and the house is full of artifacts of the old cartoons, including a scavenger hunt for kids. There is no need to spend a lot of time there, but for the price of admission and the time required to see it, it is worth it.

This is so unique. Inside is interesting with artifacts & the outside structure is really neat. This is a must do when in the area. History at its finest.

Interesting surprise
Aug 2019
We were in Grand Marais on vacation and stumbled onto this museum next to where we had dinner. It was late and closed, but we learned a lot of interesting history from the sign and from peeking in the windows. They are currently doing restoration work on it. Great little quick stop to add memories to your trip!

Should be a Roadside America attraction
Jul 2019
The house is based on a comic strip, “The Teenie Weenies” of the 19teens and beyond. It ran for about 50 years in the Chicago Tribune. It was made by a barrel maker and gifted to the cartoonist. Somebody actually lived in it for a few years. It’s a cute little stop in a cute little town.

Unusual attention-getter!
Jul 2019 • Couples
We'd never heard of the "Teenie Weenies" so this "attraction" didn't mean much to us. Still, the pickle barrel house is cute, like something from the hobbits' habitat in Lord of the Rings.

Pickle Barrel House Museum

What an oddity! Constructed as a public relations gimmick for a cartoon strip, this tiny house was actually lived in by two people for 10 summers. It isn't a trip to Grand Marais without seeing the Pickle Barrel House. Since it is staffed strictly by volunteers hours are spotty but usually summer weekends are more accessible.

Adorable Little House

We were here Memorial Weekend but left on Sunday, bummed we didn’t get to see the inside, but the kids loved it. Just checked out a “Teenie Weenies” book from our local library to learn more!
