Good Stop. Friendly with Kids
Jul 2019
In a way this is a typical maritime museum: a historical lighthouse keeper's building filled with period pieces. In a way, the interaction opportunities make it far better than most.

The building was formerly the keepers house for the Grand Marais Range Lights. The rear range lighthouse is just a few hundred feet away. The docents are volunteers so the hours are limited, even during the tourist season but they were very knowledgable and enjoyed interacting with my kids. There is a scavenger hunt for the kids which kept them engaged. They even let the kids touch the old hand-crank telephone and they turned on the old record player. Most historical museums are look-but-don't-touch, which bores kids. This one didn't. I was ready to go before my kids were.

History comes Alive

The Grand Marais Maritime Museum gives a succinct and interesting look into Grand Marais' past. Besides the maritime history there are exhibits on the early settlement before tourism became the economic driver. Be sure to check out the story of Devil's track lake and the CCC camps.

Nice little museum
Aug 2018 • Family
This is a nice little museum oriented toward the light keepers on the Great Lakes. Does not take long to visit. Volunteer docent is enthusiastic and freindly. He added a lot of context and history to the items on display.

Saw the Lighthouse & Visited the Keeper's Museum
Jul 2018 • Couples
We visited here July 16th on our journey to see lighthouses in the UP. When we first got here the museum wasn't opened. We checked out the front range & rear range lighthouses, took pictures and walked along the shore line. When we came back in the afternoon, the museum was open. Very nice museum with super friendly staff. We had a very pleasant/enjoyable visit with them.

Lovely Town on Superior
Nov 2016 • Couples
Out of Season, I wish I had a $ for each time I see it ! Closed & Locked up when we arrived , but it was a beautiful crisp & sunny day with a large swell coming in , so we wandered around the area and could tell it would be a great spot in season !! A Lovely Town on the shore of Lake Superior !

Got there 10 minutes before they closed and spent 30 minutes talking with the docent. It was so interesting to hear about recent history of Grand Marais.

Great place to view some history right on the shores of Lake Superior. Bike, walk or drive down the road towards the pier.
