About
FIA Closed March 14 Through April 6 As the spread of COVID-19 continues worldwide, the Flint Institute of Arts (FIA) has been assessing and investigating all options regarding our venues and operations. We have made the decision to close all public spaces at the FIA and the FIA Art School effective tomorrow, Saturday, March 14. All public programs, special and/or private events, and meetings between March 14 and April 5 are postponed or canceled at this time. Although this was a difficult decision, the health and safety of our guests, students, volunteers, and staff is our first priority. The FIA recognizes its part helping minimize the spread of the virus and its impact on our community and national health systems. We appreciate your flexibility and patience as we move through this unprecedented time together. Spent a full day at this wonderful art museum! Arrived at 10am ahead of a morning event so checked out the lobby art installations. Look up to enjoy a beautiful Chihuly piece in the skylight. Walked out into the sculpture courtyard featuring works by Jim Dine, Deborah Butterfield, and George Rickey, among others. Attending an enlightening Curator and Coffee talk on the Group of Eight, who are featured in the current American Realism: Visions of America 1900-1950 exhibition. A joint venture between the Flint Institute of Arts, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, and the Muskegon Museum of Art, the exhibition was well worth the hour we spent enjoying the art. After a delicious lunch at the FIA Cafe, sitting below a wonderful fresco mural by Flint native Hubert Massey, we walked through the FIA galleries: Indigenous peoples of North America, Chinese and Japanese, African, Italian Renaissance, European, and early American through modern and contemporary American. The Glass and Ceramic galleries contain some stunning works. After a visit to the gift shop, and a return to the cafe for an afternoon snack, we enjoyed relaxing before we headed for home. The curators and staff are friendly and helpful. Your visit to the FIA is reasonably priced (free admission on Saturday). I live an hour's drive away and visit the FIA at least once a year, sometimes two, depending on the special exhibitions or lectures.

This place has such a terrific variety of things to look at...art from various cultures, different periods, different dimensions. Sculpture, carvings, textiles, paintings...Glass pieces are wonderful and free glass demos captivating. And for a break...the Cafe offers a pleasant respite, nice food and the coffee offerings are really good. Unusual gift shop too. Easy parking to boot.

What a wonderful fun art museum! It is easy to find from the Interstate and from downtown Flint. A broad and well rounded collection and always vital, interesting exhibitions added. Works from ancient to classical to modern. A beautiful sculpture courtyard and an education wing. Easy parking.

Several nice gift shops and a cafe, too. A beautiful Chihuly chandelier in the lobby.

I was worried about the continuing TERRIBLE Flint water crisis. It is still shocking that this crisis has not been resolved for the poor neighborhoods. This has dragged on since 2014! But I have been to the Art Institute several times since then and the cultural campus and wealthy areas have protected and clean water. Of course!

A lovely day spent at the museum. Great variety of exhibits. The cafe offers tasty eats and a nice selection of wine. We had a few specific exhibits that we wanted to see and found a few surprises, too.

Go in and look at the lobby. It is the interesting part of the building. The staff is stuck up, and not very friendly or welcoming. I had the opportunity to meet with a couple of the people working the business side of this company as well, all with the same attitude. Two volunteers I came across were the most friendly and courteous, but of course we know vols do not get paid from arts funding....
Now as for the collection I will say its is rather dull. There are a few pieces here and there but overall a boring setup. Many others are far superior ex. st.louis etc... the pieces they chose to display are just lacking soo much, honestly just go into a hallmark store or borders and gain more culture.
The plus side they have a decent size room for events and the cafe' is something. They will also cater to schools. They have classrooms and studios for some so that's a huge bonus.
I not saying don't go considering other options around Flint, but don't get too excited. Always support the arts but this place needs staffing overhaul from the top down before people like me should consider donation grants

Nice museum. Everyone was friendly. Barely anyone was there so we felt like we had it all to ourselves. A nice way to spend about 2 hours.

What a little jewel in Flint a short distance from Detroit about an hour - plus away. It is an intimate art museum, with all the charm to be uncovered. The exhibits are nicely setup with lo ts of breathing room to explore. I just loved it and felt it will be a "go-to-again" type of experience!
