We drove down from Alpina, MI on a Saturday, July 16, 2022. Last year we were here but got flooded out of our plans. So this time the intrepid ones made it. We scheduled another lighthouse for this day also, Sturgeon Point, just 40 minutes north of here.
Being located on State Park land, you have to pay to park. Then you pay another small fee to tour the light and the house. NfM. Normal for Michigan.
There is so much to see here for your 5 bucks, and many people just climb the tower, get their passport stamped, maybe buy a souvenir at the very adequate gift shop, and move on. That was our plan on this day.
Tours are scheduled and accompanied by volunteer keepers. You get your receipt at the gift shop in a separate building, noting the time for your tour. There are a limited number of people permitted on each tour. There is no free ranging inside. It's very structured and we like that.
Be sure and check their website for days and hours. Then it's first come first served.
The climb to the top is mild. Young folks just sprint up the iron spiral stairs. There's not much room up there, we had to keep shifting around to share the best views. The tour guide up there, major Tom from Buffalo NY, kept things moving along and orderly.
We like that.
Fritomann is happy now that we finally got to tour this very popular light station.

Breathtaking views of Lake Huron and the lighthouse. Birds galore and trail was a mix of packed clay, dirt and small gravel. Well maintained. Tree foliage with some color change. Very lucky to see a bald eagle as well.

Unlike the rest of Tawas Point State Park, this lighthouse is well taken care of. The lighthouse, buildings & gift shop were closed due to covid, but you can walk around it & take pictures.
Take the short path from the parking lot. There's information boards telling you the history. We looked in the windows into the kitchen area. Looked nice.

Paid $9 to get in to the park to tour the lighthouse. Once we got to lighthouse there were signs that said tours are not being given this year because they cannot disinfect the hard services, however the gift shop was open!. That would have been nice to know before we paid to get in.

We weren't able to tour the lighthouse, but it's still a very nice place to visit. You can park in the lot and can easily walk to the lighthouse as well as the beach. The entire area is very pretty and it was very fun for my 4 year-old son! Definitely a must-stop if you are in the area.

I visited the Tawas Point lighthouse in East Tawas, Michigan, with folks who signed up to be volunteer lighthouse keepers for a week and were there for training. The lighthouse is located on Lake Huron within the Tawas Point State Park which is a lovely place that draws families throughout the summer.

The lighthouse is attached to a museum that has a Keeper's Quarters located in the upper level. There is also a nice, small gift shop on the property.

If you are looking for a unique 'working' vacation at an amazing location, you may want to check into the program they offer to be a Volunteer Lighthouse keeper. See the website for more details. Each participant pays $225 for the week to stay there. All funds go to the renovation and upkeep of the lighthouse. There are 2 bedrooms, fully equipped kitchen, nice bathroom. When tour time is closed you can spend all the time you want up in the lighthouse and watch the sunrise and sunset. Very cool program which they have been doing for 4 years. Only one of the 30 people there had ever been a lightkeeper in a lighthouse. Very few had even ever been to Tawas!

I was also impressed with the park itself. Camping sites were available. In addition to Lake Huron and the bay for swimming/sunbathing, there are also two ponds available for dogs to swim.

We met the park rangers and all were very pleasant and dedicated individuals who were obviously proud of the park and lighthouse and all they have to offer.

This is definitely a location to put on your list of places to visit.

If you want to kill a few minutes in Tawas, take a scenic drive into the state park, and see this lighthouse right by the water. The picture says it all. I didnt care to pay the money to go to the top..

We went over to the lighthouse and took a tour. Very interesting to see the lighthouse and the history about the house. We were able to climb up into where the light is located. Great trails to walk as well and they have a gift shop next to the lighthouse. 5 bucks per person for the tour.
