We overcame the total lack of beauty in the exterior hoping for something good inside. A waste of space and of time. I inquired and there is no permanent collection at all on display. We were sent to the basement where we could glimpse the archived collection through the glass. We have lived in different state college towns and have enjoyed taking company to our college art museums for a glimpse of the art each state's artists have produced or collected--along with some lovely periodical special exhibits. I expected the same! The current exhibit was small and uninteresting to us, the stairs going up had a "mature content" sign. Not a place to take kids or middle school art students, and not a place to take older relatives wanting to learn more about our new state. So much for an art museum. Extremely disappointed.

We were drawn to the museum by the architecture and stayed for the exhibits. Enjoyed the Frida Kahlo letters, photos and memorabilia. The accompanying guide/book was a welcome accompaniment that enhanced my understanding of this fascinating woman’s life and loves. We also appreciated the graduate art on display including the dining table, reflective pool and mechanical art-I cannot express my glee at seeing the bubbles blowing in the breeze! Of especial import are the haunting portraits of wanted slaves. Eery in their presentation, I was immediately drawn to the penned descriptors on each face and exhausted when leaving. It is a must experience! Loved the interactive activity with stickers and the art station. What a gem of a museum!

The building by architect Hadid, the greatest female architect so far, is spectacular to see and be in. Wow
We saw an exhibit of her work here also running thru feb 2023 that was also amazing. Shoes, furniture, clothes, jewelry, tableware, paintings and on and on. The complete designer and architect. Worth traveling to to see the whole package. We have been in museums around the world and although the building is not huge this was a completely wonderful experience from outside to inside. Truely one of our best museum experiences ever.
Michigan State is also a very pretty campus. ( of note, this is our first time in Michigan).

This building is an abomination, and could not be a worse fit for the beautiful Michigan State University campus. It is difficult to see this train wreck as anything other than in insult to the efforts of prior building and landscape architects who designed MSU, and an affront to the students and public who have to look at it. We decided to enter the building to see if the displays could offset the tasteless exterior, and were disappointed by the mediocre fare. The museum fails on both counts.

Located on Michigan State University’s campus, the Broad is a modern art museum in which the building itself is a work of art worthy of a visit regardless of the current exhibit on display. I attended the Zaha Hadid exhibit, and it did not disappoint. In honor of the Broad’s tenth anniversary, for which Hadid was the architect, the museum is filled with incredible works by Hadid and her design firm. From paintings and building models to furniture, jewelry, and even a futuristic car, there are many beautifully unique pieces to see. You can even experience a VR tour inside a house designed by the Hadid design firm.

Please don't waste your time, and PLEASE do not take children here. One room contained hand made quilts from Pakistan, which I can see the artistic value in although they are not a favorite of mine. The second room contained bundles of junk (think balled up shirts and stuffed animals) hanging from the ceiling. Yes, it was colorful, but that was about it. The third room was filled with a "mountain" of balled up papers that were made to look like bloody rags as well as what looked like bloody hand and foot print paintings/smears on the wall, and the last room was 82 continuous feet of pink "wax" like drippings made to look like dental gums topped with teeth. The teeth were human sized and tiny soldiers sitting on top of the teeth scattered throughout. Randomly throughout the 82 foot straight line, jaw like structures popped out. I'm fairly certain that the kindergarten kids who had a tour there will have nightmares.

With the exception of the junk hanging from the ceiling, everything is within easy reach of small children even though you are repeatedly told not to touch it. The museum feels small to begin with, but they do seem to have enough room to have a Starbucks inside, even though you can not leave the small dining area with any food or beverages.

I was hopeful for the new museum, expecting sculptures, photography, painting, etc. by both regional and national artists, but the reality of what they offer was extremely disappointing. They also had a donation bin suggesting $10 per person to support the museum.

First, I detest the appearance of this on campus. It does not meld with anything on MSU, and stands out like an alien spaceship (which it closely resembles). It is ugly beyond words and should never have been built to take the place of the Kresge Art Museum. Secondly, once inside, the vertigo you may experience with all of the odd angles is further enhanced. Everything seems atilt, and just walking up and down stairs is challenging. The artwork that was there the one and only time we went was scant and relatively uninteresting. In fact, there were more video art exhibits than physical exhibits. Call me old fashioned, but I would rather spend hours viewing artwork and sculptures and the like instead of being subjected to videos that make absolutely no sense to me. I don't believe I will ever go back into the spaceship.

My first thought after seeing the building completed on Grand River Avenue was that it should have been put somewhere so that a person could view the whole building from afar. I also was disappointed that it clashed with the beautiful old buildings surrounding it. OK, I get that it is supposed to invoke a response from visitors, one way or the other but, the only thing running through my mind is how $40,000,000 could have been used to fund cancer research, feed hungry people, or take care of wounded veterans and their families. When I saw that there were about three exhibits per very large room and, in at least two of the rooms I'm pretty sure, the exhibit amounted to a video loop on a TV set, I was really disgusted. I felt guilty that so much money was used to display, in my mind, some very strange so-called art. I know that many people would say that my reaction is typical of a person that has no appreciation of fine art and wouldn't know it if he bumped into it, but I have been to art museums around the world and I appreciate art as much as the next person. I never got the feeling that it was a waste of money to display the art in any of the other museums I visited.

Another thing bothered me. As we walked around the museum, we were followed by a student security person until we left each room. I don't have a problem with security, but the security person should be in the room when the viewer gets there and not follow the viewer around as if they suspected him to steal or damage something. My wife and brother-in-law and I are all senior citizens and I felt guilty just walking into some the exhibits with a student security person hot on my tail.

So, needless to say, I was not impressed with my first visit to Broad. My hope is that it will continue to improve over time and ultimately become a world-class art museum.

Weird and out of place. A waste of money. Upkeep is staggering. Scared my Grand daughter.
Have you ever seen Night Gallery? Well, it's a lot like that. Placement with the beautiful old buildings is bad. Should be out in one of the fields. It gives the folks in Ann Arbor something to laugh at us about. Might be good to visit , once, as it is so bizarre, that you couldn't believe it.
The more elitist folks will think it's great. Remember the child's book - "The Emperor's new clothes"? Well- this would be a good metaphor for the Museum. Now- aren't you glad you asked for 100 words?

Yes, it is an extremely modern building-as required by M/M Broad and the architect, Zaha Hadid. In a better setting, this building would be magnificent, but set in the 'classic' part of the MSU campus, it is jarringly out of place and there is no parking close by: not easily accessible by those with disabilities. The interior of the Museum is cold and sterile: it is sad that this Museum sees no value in displaying art from the original Kresge Art Museum-preferring to have empty walls and a lot of open spaces between various installations. I can and do appreciate contemporary art, but the team leading this Museum seems to have a blatant prejudice against anything other than the most outre forms of modern art. Currently, the Museum is without an Executive Director: I hope that the person chose to lead will try to bring contemporary/modern art offerings to viewers along with classic art.
