The collection of books is simply amazing and they have a fantastic staff. The diversity and breadth of books will blow your mind. The only negative is that you will find yourself buying more books than you can carry. Be ready to be overwhelmed!

I love to read books. As a retired newspaperman, I suppose that is part of my DNA. And I have an addiction for book stores, especially stores that specialize in first editions and rare books. And I'm always looking for books relating to my favorite subjects--the American Civil War, the Old West, Sports, Biography, Alexander and Ancient Civilizations, Hollywood and World War II. In Detroit, Michigan, I found John K. King Books, one of the most fascinating and interesting book stores I have ever experienced. Located at 901 West Lafayette Boulevard, in the Cass Corridor neighborhood, adjacent to Wayne State University, it spans four floors and has more than a million books in stock, including a large collection of used and rare books. It has been described as "one of the largest and strangest collections in North America." As soon as you walk into the store, an employee will hand you a map that will conveniently direct you to the subjects you are looking for, from signed copies of Ernest Hemingway's novels to free copies of old phone books and magazines to rare comics and paperbacks. Interested in original photographs of Mark Twain tucked into a Mark Twain biography or a signed pamphlet from the 1950s with a signed presentation from the junior Senator from Massachusetts, John F. Kennedy? At King's, you can even find a copy of Mao Tse Tung's Little Red Book. As you might expect, King has a many books and papers relating to Detroit's auto industry, from Ford to Dodge to DeLorean. After almost two hours of browsing from one aisle to another, from one stack to another, I came away with rare books on Mary Pickford, Henry Clay and the Chisholm Trail. And you can be sure I'll be keeping in contact with King's database to uncover more literary gems.

I love John King books because I always find something interesting to read each visit. I don’t always find what I am looking for but I often do and staff are friendly and always there to help. Wish they were in Windsor, I would go daily.

I was looking for the book series, "A series of unfortunate events" And a nice and fine gentlemen brought me and my mom to a isle. I grabbed a few books and he took us up on an elevator ride to get more. He politely told us that he would get us the book we requested and bring it to the counter when we finished. The staff was so polite and the bookstore was SO cool. It really made me think that all of the books I would be purchasing, another person used to sit and read the same exact book! I practically shared a book with a stranger! You should 100% Visit if your looking for a place to stop!
