John King Books is the kind of bookstore any bibliophile would love to have in their hometown!! I've been buying books from John King for some 40 years. Started when the store was over on Bagley Ave. When I worked downtown, I would venture into the store every few weeks (any more frequently and I was sure to go broke for the month!). The inventory there is so large and dense that I was able to build up a couple of my collections without having to mail-order or online sources. Then we started visiting the store (a 4-story warehouse) together. Through the years, it has been a great source of gifts to give to our family and friends who appreciate books and ephemera and other interesting items. Be sure to plan your trip! Make a list of titles or authors or subjects you wish to look for, and pick up a map at the front desk! Of course, you may just wish to walkabout each floor, checking the list of subjects covered on each floor, and immerse yourself. If you have questions, just ask. There are staff on each floor available to point you to the right aisle. Our recent visit, the first one in two years was successful with both my husband and myself happy with the results of our time there!

You will never find more book variety under one roof except maybe the Library of Congress. Every time I visit I always something I was looking for or a nice surprise. Last visit I found four books I was looking for.

Great gem of a store! Lots of fun finds at decent prices. Everyone in our party found something of interest. I love the look of the building with it’s old floors. It’s like your favorite old book hugging you!

So, I was really excited to visit this book store and it did not disappoint. When we first walked in a member of the staff gave us a map showing where all the different genres of books were on the 4 floors. At first it was a little overwhelming and some of the aisles were kind of dark. We found out after a bit that there are lights on the aisles and you can pull them on as you needed. Overall this was a good visit. Most of the staff was very friendly and helpful. We found lots of treasures to buy. I would give this review an excellent score except for one small incident. My mother who is 73 had to use the restroom. To do this you have to get the key from the first floor and then the bathroom is on the second floor. While she was in the bathroom I waited around outside so we wouldn't lose each other (which is easy somewhere this big). The bathroom locked behind her, however a male employee started to use his own key to go in, I stopped him and told him there is someone in there, he said, "that's ok, there's two stalls" and proceeded to go in. I didn't know what to say, I was so shocked....so he went in and did his business in the stall next to my mother. Now to some people this might not be a big deal, but to someone her age (and mine I must admit) this is very uncomfortable. I know there are two stalls, but I don't think a male employee should go in while a lady is in there unless they make sure it's ok with the lady. Maybe I'm old school but that's how I feel. Other than that....this is an awesome place, if you like books, or old buildings, or history, you should visit.

This is much more than a book store, it’s an experience. The selection of books is more than one can take in on one visit, with every possible genre and topic on four floors. I could have stayed in there all day long but the sheer vastness of the place got overwhelming. I did leave with a few books, it’s next to impossible not to find something interesting in there. I will definitely go back many times and wish I went earlier!

First off, I have to talk about the building, because if you are expecting a Barnes & Noble, you will be surprised. The four-story brick building was once home to a glove manufacturer and has a unique character of its own with creaky wooden floors and 100-year-old windows.

The collection of books is expansive, almost too much to browse in some ways. It is fairly well organized (once I finally saw the sign that said the stacks are organized to flow toward the windows). They had a large number of older Sci-Fi paperbacks, both popular and obscure, and some interesting sports books.

The layout of the building and the tight stairwell could be challenging for those with mobility problems.

It's also a bit dark and dusty in certain areas, but I think it is part of the charm.

The staff was friendly and helpful and gave out a map upon arrival.

Parking is onsite on the north side of the building, but finding it can be a bit of a challenge. Look for signage on the building itself.

My experience was less than satisfactory and I found them to be lacking in ethics.

They will make you out to be the bad guy and refuse to accept any responsibility for their mistakes.

And God forbid you expect an apology.

I was looking for the book series, "A series of unfortunate events" And a nice and fine gentlemen brought me and my mom to a isle. I grabbed a few books and he took us up on an elevator ride to get more. He politely told us that he would get us the book we requested and bring it to the counter when we finished.

The staff was so polite and the bookstore was SO cool. It really made me think that all of the books I would be purchasing, another person used to sit and read the same exact book! I practically shared a book with a stranger! You should 100% Visit if your looking for a place to stop!

...and the fragrance of a charming old book store greets you. 4 floors with everything - Shakespeare and Steinbeck, zoology and child rearing. And a highly helpful staff. What a fun 2 hrs we had!

I was so excited to find a book I had been seeking for years. I felt as if I was in an ancient Library. Everything is priced reasonable. Love this place!
