There was not a ton of information here engaged my son. It helped to have had a little knowledge before we went. We read up on a couple of historic tankers and learned some facts about our Great Lakes. He loved looking at the maps and touching anything he could. It was a quick trip for us--we stayed about a... Visiting the Dossin Great Lakes Museum was just sort of an afterthought during our visit to Belle Isle. We had some extra time after visiting some of the other attractions on the island and decided to pop in. We were very surprised how nice it was for such a small museum. The actual ship's bridge was a hit with our... More

It is a little out of the way, but a very cool museum about great lakes shipping from the early days to date. It is on Belle Isle which is now being operated by the DNR and so there is a modest fee to go on the island. If you are a Michigan resident who opted for a Recreation Passport... More

The gothic smoking room placed inside the entrance of the museum is quite the contrast from the outside, which is rather plain. Exhibits of interest include a boating simulator, a working periscope, a viewing deck from an actual boat, and an enormous collection (I think maybe the largest in North America) of model ships/boats. The museum offers guided tours on... More

Very interesting for all ages. We watched the cargo ships on the river. Kids had a great time. Love the Miss Pepsi!

We stopped here for an open house, we met Andrew Humphrey, the weatherman, and learned a lot during our visit. I never knew this was here. Please don't hesitate to check this place out.

Very nice museum. Not too big, so enough for an hour or so. The docents were very friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed most of the exhibits and learned lots of new things. Really enjoyed our time there!

I hadn't been to the Museum since grade school (which was a long time ago) and this time toured the Museum as a special tour and catered luncheon. Our docent was interesting and informative bringing in interesting stories to tell along with the narrative. Definitely would recommend it.

I the opportunity to tour this museum last summer with our Vacation Bible School students. I hadn't been in this museum in years and truly was impressed how it was being updated. This is a good endeavor for the City of Detroit.

Pleasant surprise. Worth checking out if you are on Belle Island. Full of history. We were greeted immediately by an employee who was nice and knowledgeable historian. Made the visit more interesting.
