I have relatives that live in the Boston Edison Historical District. It's Tudor mansion world. LOL All joking aside there are medium homes to large mansions there and they beautiful. I didn't feel unsafe even though it is in Detroit because it is very different from the areas surrounding it, but parts of Detroit are turning around. I love the tour my family took me on in their convertible. I am a midcentury modern type of woman but those houses were unforgettable. Lots of history and famous people lived there from Henry Ford to Berry Gordy. I had a great weekend visiting them. Their house can stand up against many of the houses in the most exclusive neighborhoods in the country. I read one man's review and got scared to visit but that neighborhood for safety was a least a B. Beauty was an A and I heard the schools stinks but that is why my little cousins attend private school. lol

Wow! I was absolutely floored at how beautiful the architecture was in this historic neighborhood. Minutes from Midtown Detroit and all the fabulous museums and restaurants that call Detroit home. I couldn't help it and bought a house there! The people are so caring and friendly, and I felt at home. Not only am I excited about the history and the architecture but also that my children will get to call Boston Edison home.

Lisa and I flew down to Detroit after hearing so much "buzz" about the city's rebirth. We found out about Boston Edison by total chance.

In our travels we tend to find places over rated, not the case here, Boston Edison is so under rated. We could not believe the palatial mansions that stood before us, if you didn't know any better you would think that you were in Paris. Rarely do you find such architectural gems in the US, and with such significant architecture let alone at community of 900 Mansions. Boston Edison is a must see for any dreamer of what life was like during the roaring 20s, any designer any architect anyone who loves culture architecture and history. In Boston Edison The great Gatsby comes to life before your eyes.

Yes this place was fantastic 100 years ago. Wake up, it is not 100 years ago, it is 2016. The architecture is beautiful. A lot of the houses are in good shape, many are barely hanging on. But that's not the problem. One block in either direction is death. Highland Park is one of the most dangerous areas in the country. I worked there for 6 years. Two guns put to my head, three vehicles stolen and six times my truck broken into. If you want to sight see protect yourself with a large caliber weapon with plenty of ammo. I am not kidding, don't be foolish. Funny true story, just three blocks south of boston. My company was installing a boiler. We had three trucks parked at the rear of the building. After eight hours working we came out to our trucks. There were police all around. They had found a body in a car. They had put caution tape all around the crime scene. They used one trucks mirror to hang the tape on. The police would not let Tom leave as it was his truck in the crime scene. I got in my truck, said goodbye and flew out of there. Tom did survive, they let him leave in about an hour.

Was lucky enough to stay in a Bed and Breakfast in this historic area. Each home was at one time, stunningly beautiful in what was once a very exclusive neighbourhood during Detroit's heyday.
Now, some homes are pristine and well cared for - others, needing some tlc, abandoned or in varying stages of decay. Very interesting to explore the neighbourhood both on foot and by car.
A word of caution: the area around this historic district is NOT a good neighbourhood ... While exploring on foot nearby, I was stopped by two different people, clearly locals, and warned to be careful. Visit during daylight hours!

I am born and bred here in the great metropolitan area of Detroit and I have never heard of the Boston Edison Historic District until I was looking up houses for sale in the Detroit area on a website.
I had to check out the area. Mind you just a block over the area is a war zone but driving down this area of Detroit is like going back to the 1915 time period when Ford, Edison, Detroit Tiger owner, then Berry Gordon moved into one of these home in the 1960s.
This is a historic district whereby the homeowners have a website of their own and you could see how proud they are living in this district. Must check that out.
The area is very close to downtown and the Fisher Theatre.
I was so amazed by the homes there that I had to tell all my friends about it. Now I'm letting you all know as well.

I use to live in this area of Detroit and still have family living there. If you want to visit an area that is still trying to preserve an era that is reflective of the bygone days when auto magnates, drug store entrepreneurs and members of Detroit's affluent inhabited this part of the city then this is a look back into time. The B. Segal Home, the Henry Ford Home, the Kinsel Mansion, the Kresge Mansion and many others still stand in the middle of a city ravaged by blight and desolation.

Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company, lived here. Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records, lived here. So did labor leader Walter P. Reuther, baseball stars Harry Heilmann, Dizzy Trout and Willie Horton and boxing champion Joe Louis. Also Walter Briggs, one-time owner of the Detroit Tigers, and S.S. Kresge, founder of the S.S. Kresge Company. And Charles T. Fisher, president of the Fisher Body corporation, whose 18,000-square-foot house is the largest in the district. They all lived in the Boston Edison Historic District, a neighborhood in the center of Detroit, Michigan. Bounded by Edison Avenue, Woodward Avenue, Linwood Avenue and West Boston Boulevard, it is one of the largest residential historic districts in the nation with more than 900 homes. Designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1973 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, it is surrounded by Sacred Heart Major Seminary to the west, the Arden Park-East Boston Historic District and the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament to the east and the Atkinson Avenue Historic District to the south. The first homes in the Boston Edison district were occupied in 1905 with the majority built between 1905 and 1925. But each home is unique. Architectural styles range from English Tudor Revival to Roman and Greek Revival to French Provincial to Colonial Revival to Italian Renaissance to Prairie Style to Vernacular. They range from modest two-story to massive mansions set on sprawling grounds.

First off, I tried to follow the address they provided on here. But that is not correct. Download either of the tours on their site (we did the driving one), and put in the first address listed. Many of the houses were quite large, but many, I felt, were tiny considering who owned them back then. I was expecting all ginormous mansions like some I've seen in Grosse Pointe off Moross Rd. Many were in major disrepair and/or neglect with rotting windows or balconies, tall grass/unkempt landscaping, boarded up windows/doors, etc. Lots of beautiful architecture and landscaping despite all that. I got photos only of the houses listed on the driving tour. Also there were groups of guys hanging out in the street though, in some areas, so I got a bit worried of taking pictures near them. Kind of a shame for the people obviously trying to maintain their own properties. I feel Indian Village is 100x better. Not sure if I, myself, would feel comfortable walking alone. But there were people of all walks of life, jogging, walking their dog, doing lawn maintenance, etc. We went early evening. Maybe early-late morning would be best when people are still waking up/getting ready for work, so no traffic/people being suspicious of you. No one was rude or really spoke though.

Beautiful historic neighborhood with a "walk" once a year. Strong neighborhood association, and a large park for walking dogs: Voight Park.
