American Jewelry and Loan American Jewelry and Loan is owned by Leslie...

American Jewelry and Loan American Jewelry and Loan is owned by Leslie "Les" Gold, the son of a pawnbroker who once owned Sam's Loans, a now-defunct pawnshop on Michigan Avenue in Detroit. Les first opened American Jewelry at the Green Eight Shopping Center on 8 Mile Road in Oak Park in 1978, moving to its present location in 1993.The Gold family and the daily operations of the store are the subject of the truTV reality show 'Hardcore Pawn'. This flagship show has broken numerous audience records and recently celebrated its 100th episode. Visitors are often surprised to learn that the store still operates as a full-service pawn shop and that members of the Gold family are still heavily involved in the daily operations in the store despite their busy filming and appearance schedules.

Being in Detroit, you have to go and see this place. Having watched the programme on TV, we were surprised to see how small it was. Everything is however, just like you see it on TV. We did not see the owners, but did see a lot of the staff that come on the show. We had a quick look... More

Had to see this place after watching it on TV. Didn't get to see any of the owners but had a chat with one of the retail assistants we recognised. Everybody calm in the shop not like on TV.

It's always interesting to see TV stuff in the real world. Getting there was easy enough from downtown on the 16 - Dexter bus. The driver said he'd tell us when to get off but he forgot so at the end of the run he turned the bus around and personally took us back - what a legend! We were... More

We went to Detroit for the day and this was one of my must see places. I was excited enough to just be there then i look over my shoulder and theres Les getting photos with people and then Seth comes out as well. Everyone is just there doing their jobs and its just a normal day for them but... More

Stop in on a day of down time. Seen the show and thought it would cool to stop and check it out. Pretty good selection of merchandise and everyone seemed friendly.

I was down in Detroit on business and had to go see the place. I have seen other reviews on here where people put the place down and say "just a pawn shop". Well I don't look at that as a negative. Les and family know exactly what business they are in; pawns, loans, and sales. So as a pawn... More

Unlike other tv show businesses, American Jewelry and Loan have truly figured out how to cater to gawkers and take care of customers. I was both. They had an impressive collection of sports memorabilia and jewelry to conveniently complete my Christmas shopping list. The owner, Les, did come out to check on things and was gracious enough to take a... More

We stopped at American Jewelry because my sister lives in Detroit and we were in town visiting her. I figured it would be worth a stop to see what it looked like and to see if it looked like it does on the show. It is not in a bad section of town at all. Yes you do crossover 8... More

We came by just to see the size, layout and "feel" of the store. It was worth the stop, but we did not choose to buy anything.

Upon entering was greeted, but that was the only time was acknowledged while in the store. Went to 3 different Jewelry counters and could not get waited on, NOT Busy! Had to flag down someone to assist us and then the person acted as if we were bothering them. No personality whatsoever to be dealing with the public. Typical Pawn... More
