This is an interesting and educational place to visit. It is a self guided tour. You just follow the blue fish painted on the cement. There is a visitor center and the hatchery building. It is a short walk to the river maybe 200 feet. We went to the river but the weirs were in place. It was September 15 and the salmon were not running yet. Good for all ages. I recommend stopping.

We like visiting fish hatcheries so decided to check it out. Established in 1928 it became the state’s main salmon hatchery for stocking Michigan waters. The visitor center has nice displays, self-guided tour maps and a video about Michigan hatcheries. Once you leave the visitor center you follow the blue fish trail marker to the other buildings. The informative signs are a bit faded. This time of year there is not much going on so we didn’t see many staff. But the hatchery building had raceways full of coho salmon fry. We saw the weir and walked around the pond. It would be interesting to be here in October when the salmon return to the weir and their eggs are harvested. Apparently they host school groups. Not for everyone but still interesting and free!

Be warned that the location that Trip Advisor marks as the location of the fish hatchery on their map in Beulah is very wrong. The hatchery is 10 miles east of Beulah on US 31. Here is the address.

15210 US-31, Beulah, MI 49617

Interesting place to stop.
