Spent Martin Luther King weekend skiing/snowboarding Schuss mountain with my two teenage boys. We had a great time and despite the warm winter we are having, I'd say 90% of the runs were open. We stayed at the Lakeview hotel and our room was nice and clean. The Lakeview restaurant in the hotel is gorgeous, but only served buffet dinner and breakfast on the weekends which was disappointing. The restaurant has so much potential! We ate most of our meals at the River Bistro, which had really great food and a friendly staff right off the purple lift when we were skiing. My boys, who play football, enjoyed the large weight room at the Lakeview resort as well. If you have any problems with your ski or snowboard equipment, or just need a tune up go to Dead-On Tuning center in Schuss village. The guy that works in there (I think his name is Ryan) is so nice and helpful.

I went with the gold to watch people ski from a warm location with a fireplace and a hot cup of coffee. Lynn and reservations was phenomenal. She went out of her way to send me pictures of the room that she thought would best fit my needs. And she did not disappoint! I very thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

After reading some of these reviews, I had no idea what to expect. I will start by saying that I am super picky about hotels. But I was absolutely so impressed with the entire Shanty Creek experience.
We had the king parlor room. The first thing I noticed was the view. Beautiful view of the lake, and trees for miles.
The room was a good size. King bed, little kitchen, roomy bathroom. It was all very clean and well-maintained. The pillows were soft and fluffy, and the bed was comfortable.
We had no issues with noise from other guests, and couldn't hear people in the hall or the adjoining rooms.
The resort is absolutely massive, and there's plenty of natural beauty. Made for some enjoyable evening walks.
We did not visit the pool, but it looked clean. Grounds are also maintained well.
We ate at the Lakeview restaurant. While the menu has few choices, the food was delicious. The breakfast bar and omelet bar in the morning were also very tasty. Staff was friendly and attentive and helpful.
The golf courses are very nice, and also staffed with kind and knowledgeable people.
There were a few cosmetic things like some chipping and scuffs in the room, but they are so minor that it wasn't even noticeable.
Balcony was sturdy, and made for some great sunset watching.
I will definitely recommend this resort to people, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time here.

For paying over $200 for a one night stay, I was very disappointed in what I found. I had to climb steps to get to check in. When I went to the room, it was small. It did not have any hangars to hang my wet coats up on. There were not enough towels and wash cloths for my party of three. The room’s screen patio door was very hard to open. The tv screen was very small. It was very hard to find an outlet to plug into. Most were behind something. The room was farther than any other room from the main area or lobby. We were given a shower only (barely big enough for one person) and not a tub and shower. I found out that you have to request a room with a tub and shower if you want it. The room did not even have a table and chairs to eat at. Our last stay at another hotel had 2 queen beds, a hideabed sofa, table and 2 chairs, lake view with patio and chairs, 55inch screen tv hanging on the wall not in a cabinet, beautiful pictures and on the top floor near the elevator like I always request. All of this for less than $100 per night I paid.

This owner rental requires a serious update and cleaning. The fact that the owner allows a pet does not excuse the musty carpet, moldy bathroom and ratty towels. Shameful greedy resort and owner!

Full disclosure we visited during the pandemic so the resort may be taking advantage of the time to do updates.
Positives:
They have a wide variety of options to stay. Hotel room, condo or house.
Resort is the clean and appears to be maintained well.
Golf courses are pristine and challenging.
There appears to be ton of things to do in the winter too.
The cons:
The pool was not heated. It was so cold the kids refused to swim on a 90 degree day. We ended up lake swimming because the water was much more comfortable.
The restaurant food and drink was subpar. Save yourself and just go into town for food and drink. I was excited when I saw the different options but I've food cooked in the microwave that was better. We stopped for a drink at one of the bars and the beer selection was small and out of season.
Overall I recommend because of the beauty and the things you can do enjoying the outdoors. It being a resort I would expect the food and accommodations to be better.

From the front desk to the ski rental workers to the Lakeview restaurant staff, everyone at Shanty Creek Resorts made us feel welcomed and valued. Even with Covid restrictions in place, the service, food and ski lines were good.Definitely will be back next year!

Cedar River has the best accommodations. Most rooms are very nice. We stay there during ski season several times a year. The slopes are well maintained, regardless of the weather, the lift operators are friendly, the ski patrol are watchful and responsive, the desk personnel are very accommodating, The rooms are relatively clean (of course I am OCD about any dust bunnies lol). Food and drink are a little overpriced for the quality at both the Bistro and Ivans but the servers are really great and very friendly.

A group of us traveled to Shanty and played all 5 of their courses. Loved each course as every course has something unique from the other. If I was forced to rank them they would be:
Legend
Cedar River
Hawks Eye
Schuss
Summit
Nothing beats the jaw dropping views as you play each track.
Stayed at the Lakeview hotel, staff made checkin a breeze. The room was very clean and my balcony overlooking lake Bellaire was amazing.
Without a doubt will be coming back to Shanty.

No there is no discount. Can get cheaper if you buy online in advance but no refund. Sorry I took so long
Planning a trip around 3rd week of August there. Can we rent canoes from you guys? Would it be cheaper to rent a condo or two rooms at the hotel? Family of 6 but kids want to use the pool.

Haven't seen a canoe rental at Shanty Creek. Kayak & boat rentals can be done on Torch Lake at the DeWitt Marina.
Condo rental might be cheaper. We have a time share so not sure.
Try VRBO or HomeAway for a deal on a condo. There is a pool available if you rent one of the Legend Cottage condos & also possibly the Snowshoe condos, as well.
With the condo rentals, you might also have access to their private beach & picnic grounds on Lake Bellaire.
You could ask your questions of Vacation Club who does the time share rental. They are very nice. 888-275-0100
Have fun!

I’m thinking about heading to shanty creek to play golf. How many courses are on the property?

Hello, Scott. Thanks for your question. Shanty Creek Resorts has four courses including two of Michigan's Top 20 ranked courses--Arnold Palmer's The Legend and Tom Weiskopf's Cedar River GC. The other two courses are quite worthy too. Schuss Mtn GC plays like two distinct 9-hole courses where the front weaves through pine forests and the back features a lot of elevation changes and doglegs. The Summit course, while not as long as the other three, forces players to dial in their short/approach game and requires deft putting skill on its greens.
With Palmer and Weiskopf, SCRs golf reputation is solid. In 2012 Conde Nast Traveler named SCR among the Top Golf Resorts in the World, and tops in Michigan. We think it's pretty special, and hope you will too.

What helps make any of the courses, on or off-site more memorable is where you stay. Check accommodations that fit: hotel, condo, townhome or single family home. i love a TH looking onto the green at Cedar River.

Thinking of spending a weekend road biking in this area. Found a place @ Shanty Creek on VRBO that looks interesting. Wondering what area is like for road biking.....

Thanks for your question, Violettte.
Antrim County has become a huge draw for road riding and mountain biking alike. The rolling hills that make up the terrain create long, subtle climbs and bombable descents. Meanwhile the relative lack of vehicle traffic makes it more suitable and safe than some of the bigger towns in northern Michigan. The scenery is stunning with many inland lakes to pass and small towns to connect a long day in the saddle. For single track riding, the newly constructed Glacial Hills trail system (just 3 miles west of Shanty Creek) creates 30+ miles of IMBA approved riding trails.
I hope this helps.
