Bay Sail is an educational organization that helps teach youth on the ecology and environment of the Great Lake. I've heard great things about their school programs for many years and the money from cruises helps support their educational programming.

My family and an out of town visitor had a chance to ride on the Appledore IV for their Sunset Cruise excursion on a Friday evening. The crew was friendly and professional. They did a wonderful job explaining the history of the ship and the local area. The trip down the river and on the lake was very nice and viewing the sunset from Lake Huron was amazing.

This was my second float with Bay Sail. I had taken my kids on one of their dinner sails several years ago on the 4th of July. I hope that the dinner sail returns as a future excursion. For this trip, my family brought takeout from a local restaurant. It was a fun experience eating dinner as the ship made its way down the channel.

The crew and Captain were great,; friendly, professional, and highly experienced. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the ride. We have been to Mackinac a few times and this was our best experience thus far. They took personal interest in all the passengers and were engaging and made sure that everyone’s needs were met. The ride was a moment of zen.

Great experiences! I’ve been on two sails—the Bay City in the afternoon and Tawas sunset sail. Keep in mind it’s a non-profit and the price is veey fair compared to other boat trips I’ve done. While the type of sail will depend on the weather, both trips I did were very enjoyable. You’ll want to bring cash to tip the very friendly and accommodating staff, some of whom may be volunteers.

I had an amazing sunset sail on the Appledore IV tonight out of St. Ignace. Captain Matt and crew were great! If you have an opportunity to do a sail tour with this group, I highly recommend. It was an extraordinary experience, so beautiful and peaceful! Any time in nature, especially on the water cannot be beat!

We went on the sunset/fireworks cruise July 4th on Tawas Bay. We were celebrating my Dads 94th birthday. Captain Matt had everyone on the boat singing Happy Birthday to my Dad. The crew was very welcoming and knowledgeable, we had a great time!

I love the freedom of feeling the power of the wind in the sails. So I was disappointed there wasn’t more wind(which of course none of us controls). But the captain and crew did a good job with the wind available. Enjoyed watching them hoist the sails. Saginaw Bay is beautiful.

You are welcome to bring drinks and snacks. Water is a must. And sunscreen. Wish we had brought field glasses to see wildlife along the river’s edge.

They hope to move to a dock closer to the open bay which would increase the portion of time that is under sail and will be much appreciated.

A perfect fall day exploring the river on a historic sailboat. One to remember! Highly recommend for families and friends. It didn’t take much imagination to slip into a world of explorers and pirates. Loved the whole experience.

Absolutely recommend sailing with Bay Sail! Our family thoroughly enjoyed our time. We did the Great Lakes 101 and learned a lot. The crew was helpful and informative. The length of the sail was just right. We planned our trip from Toledo to include this excursion and are very happy we did. If you are looking for activities to do around Saginaw Bay, definitely put this on your list. Bay Sail provides educational opportunities which is another reason to support them.

Things that may be important to those considering a sail: families with young children please bring a life jacket, there is a bathroom on board, you can bring snacks and drinks. There is plenty of seating and you can move around.

My wife and I had booked the Appledore for our wedding. The day of was great, but beware of booking with Roger, it was by far the worst experience we had in the process of planning our wedding. Our experience with the crew aboard the Appledore was excellent. However, we found Roger Nugent to be extremely unprofessional, rude, and condescending. Roger failed to respond to multiple phone calls and emails in a timely manor (sometimes literally months), misrepresented himself, we found him to be petty (we initially chose to have the Baysail handle our catering arrangements, however we had placed a request with Roger to set up a tasting with our selected caterer and literally 3 months went by without Roger contacting us or the caterer. We then decided to handle the catering on our own and at that point it appeared that Roger became extremely petty and began to make the process extremely painful for our caterer). Also the day before the wedding I confirmed with Roger that there would be electrical outlets available to plug in some rope lights we had purchased to go around the railing and that there was the capabilities to hook up an iPod so we could have music during our cruise. Roger confirmed this 100% but upon boarding the Captain informed us that the power converter had been broken a long time ago and there were not even speakers hooked up. I would like to again say that our negative experience was strictly limited to Roger, and our experience with other staff (Ciara and crew onboard) was excellent. At this time we are unlikely to recommend Appledore to anyone either for dinner runs, charters, or donations as long as Roger Nugent is an integral part of Baysail.

Was disappointed in how they advertise the event. Dinner cruise consisted of 2 barbecue sandwiches and sides that is NOT a dinner pay $100 could had went the night before for the barbecue for 45. I think we had left over from night before they sandwiches was awful . Cash bar also advertise but was told can't serve alcohol on ship. Other than that sail was great and entertainment was great. Wouldn't do dinner cruise again.
