About
This is the home of the Martha's Vineyard Film Society, a non-profit arts organization that presents films, festivals and other performing arts offerings throughout the year. Currently, there are five separate film festivals held from April to September: The SPECTRUM Film Festival in April; The MV Environmental Film Festival in May, The FILMusic Festival in June, Doc(umentary) Week in August and the International Film Festival in September. Special events are truly special, often with post-screening Q&A sessions with the filmmakers. In the off-season, there's Met Opera (live from Lincoln Center), National Theatre Live, Bolshoi Ballet from Moscow as well as a wealth of documentaries, arthouse films and hard-to-find gems from around the world. Known for its comfortable seats, great sound system, eclectic concessions and specialty programming, The MV Film Center is a 5-minute walk from the SSA ferry terminal, so don't be surprise to see people from the Cape Cod visiting!

a great newly built theater, every seat with an unobstructed view of the curtain, seats that are comfortable and Richard's vision in bringing art films and first run films to a community that has nothing like it.

When the Vineyard Film Center opened several years ago it instantly shot to the top of Martha's Vineyard entertainment venues. It is a treasure! It is Martha's Vineyard's first really top-quality theater. Great selection of films, excellent projection and sound quality, 200+ super-comfortable seats, clean modern facilities -- a perfect place for movie lovers of all ages and all tastes! Enjoyed both by year-round island residents and by summer visitors, we are all extremely lucky to have the Film Center as a magnet for great movie-going!

Richard Paradise, creator/director of the Vineyard Film Society and of the Vineyard Film Center, which is the jewel in the Film Society's crown, is himself an island treasure! A total film buff, he is dedicated and hardworking and -- best of all -- he totally enjoys his work of bringing the best movies to the island. It's always wonderful to encounter a person who is living his passion -- and Richard is doing just that. We first got to know him a decade or so ago, when he had just launched a modest film festival on the island. He used to cart around projectors and films in the trunk of his car or on the back of a bicycle, rushing as quickly as he could from one rented space to another -- church halls, school auditoriums. One always wondered if Richard and his movies would get to the next venue in time to begin rolling the film -- but he never failed us, and the movies he offered were always far better than the sophomoric fare at the tacky, rundown so-called "professional" theaters. Slowly, Richard gathered a group of fans around him, master-minded a fundraising plan for a new theater, and began working toward his vision of truly great movies on Martha's Vineyard. Lo and behold -- after lots of really hard work -- he created the Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven!

Ever since, it has been really wonderful and lots of fun to become a Film Center regular. Like many other film lovers, we have joined the Martha's Vineyard Film Society (and receive ticket discounts because we attend so often). The theater constantly brings the best of world cinema to island movie buffs. Richard programs the movies and introduces every one of them with a unique combination of humor, intelligence, experience and genuine knowledge. The selection of movies is always top quality -- highbrow, occasionally low-brow, art films, pop-films, the best new American movies, great international fare, sometimes avant-garde, sometimes classic -- always meaningful and worth seeing. The Film Center has begun importing occasional film festivals and regularly schedules "special events" with leading directors, actors, writers and other filmmakers. The Film Center has regularly brought in HD productions of live theater productions from Broadway or around the world, and in October 2017 it will begin showing the Met Opera's HD live telecasts of great operas from Lincoln Center. Plus art exhibits in the lobby. There's something exciting here for everyone. Whether you're on Martha's Vineyard year-round or just visiting for a weekend, the Film Center is THE PLACE TO BE!

The film center has made a major difference on the island. It runs interesting films (and hosts other events), sometimes with appearances by the filmmakers or others connected with them. (this summer I attended two such events with fascinating Q & A sessions). Highly recommended. and become a member for discounts on the tickets not to mention supporting a fine new institution.

Although most of us travel to the Vineyard to partake in outdoor activities, there definitely is a place for a quality movie house, such as the Film Center in Vineyard Haven. My family took advantage of some terrific movie offerings this past week, and it was especially nice for my father-in-law, who has limited mobility, and wanted to have interesting options when he was unable to participate in our more physical activities (he went three times!). The theater itself is stylish (the lobby looks like you walked into an art gallery) and exceptionally clean; the seats are comfortable and sight lines are great. Movie offerings are diverse, the crowds are well mannered, and the owner not only greets and ushers patrons, but he introduces the films and adds a bit of personality to an evening "at the show". This is not the place to bring your kids for popcorn (concessions are minimal) and a Transformers movie - go to the Edgartown theaters for that. Ticket prices are on the high side, but so is everything else on the island. Enjoy.

Although we all love Martha's Vineyard for it's sylvan setting and glorious beaches and water views, sometimes you need a little entertainment of a more sophisticated nature. Sadly, except for the small Edgartown twin theater that mostly exhibits blockbuster and wide releases (fun, too, but not all the time) the rest of the ancient theaters on the island are in terrible disrepair and, worse, closed! The new Film Center theater in The Tisbury Marketplace changed movie-going on the island for so much the better a couple of years ago. I live in NYC in the winter and even there we only have a single theater on the upper West side that shows the kind of independent, foreign, documentaries, classic or off-the-beaten-path kind of fare the Film Center offers. The beautiful new theater has stadium seating, so even a shrimp like me can always see the screen. Ticket prices are reasonable and if you're in town long enough you can become a member and get discounted admission. If you'd rather see a film like Chef than one like X-Men (or see both, if you like!), now you can, even on gorgeous, tiny, nature-oriented Martha's Vineyard. There are several places to get food -- the Net Result for fantastic fried clams (and more), chowder, salads, wraps, lobster; and a great pizza joint -- so you can make a fun evening out of it. Can you tell I'm a fan? You will be, too.

We're not snobs yet the local theaters tend to show only popular movies. This theater offers a wonderful choice that we didn't have before now. The seating is comfortable but fills up quickly.

What sets this theatre apart from others is the passion of the Manager, who carefully researches films and starts each showing with a synopsis of the importance of the film. The films shown are first rate and often not available in mainstream theaters. The Vineyard is lucky to have such a great place. The ambiance of the theatre is great. The screen is very large. And the seats are wonderful and reclining. Memberships are available to support the theatre and its programming. A wonderful place.

We love the range of films avaialble on the Vineyard and mourn the loss of several theatres on the Island. The Film Center offers interesting films and the theatre has comfortable seats with good views of the screen from all parts of the theatre. Interesting snack bar as well and parking has not been a problems

We love this new film center. Richard and his crew do a tremendous job of film selection and customer service. Can't wait for the September Film Festival.
