About
Notre Dame Church is a brilliant example of Rococo Architecture, an impressive place of worship or just to enjoy the beauty. Each stone was purchased from the surplus of the Spanish American War for $1.00 each from the U.S. Government. Secretary of State William Leonard Marcy willed his family's Estate for the site of new parish. Ask for a tour- Margaret Ferrand Office Manager.

A beautiful respite
Jul 2019 • Solo
My wife and I have been to churches all over the world and this church measures up to the best of them. It is a rare beauty. The wall and ceiling painting could be at the Sistine Chapel in Rome. It is a very devotional stop and highly recommended.

Amazing spiritual experience, Norte Dame Church was a great surprise as we were passing through the area on a trip. Met the pastor after the service and he talked to us for quite a while. Couldn’t build that church today. Very special place for peace and reflection.

Amazing cathedral in the middle of nowhere
Dec 2018 • Family
Well, not really the middle of nowhere since I live here but Southbridge is definitely off the beaten path. At one time, Southbridge was a thriving mill town on a beautiful little river. The well-to-do built beautiful houses for themselves (many of which still exist with all their amazing 19th century details) and gave back to the community by building beautiful buildings like the town hall, the fire houses, the library, the hospital and this amazing cathedral.

Notre Dame sits on a beautifully landscaped parcel right in the middle of town. It's surrounded by flowing shrubs, trees and gardens in the spring. You enter the church through amazing bronze doors that I need to take the time to more closely inspect in the future. The interior of the church is magnificent with beautiful woodwork, a painted ceiling and stained glass windows. I took my mother to midnight mass on Christmas Eve several times and she loved the experience. The church in my home town is a small 1960's building that doesn't have the acoustics of Notre Dame. If you're lucky, the choir will be practicing when you visit.

The church is a monument to the generosity of the people that built Southbridge and still serves as the towns soul. It's a wonderful place and well worth a visit.

An architectural wonder. Am ALWAYS captivated by churches. This one did not disappoint. Also enjoyed hearing the locals talk about it at some of the local in-town restaurants. Makes me want to be a parishioner.

Really beautiful church. My favorite building in the entire town. Nostalgic feeling. Reminds you of our great generation when our country was family and church community oriented

A BEAUTIFUL FRENCH-INFLUENCED CHURCH TO RIVAL BIG-CITY CATHEDRALS
Jul 2017 • Solo
This church is very impressive from the street. It’s massive. It really didn’t need to be elevated. At 210 feet high, it was already imposing enough.

Its gleaming grayish white marble blocks add to its eye appeal. However, the story of why white marble was used was quite interesting. A local fellow historian told me that the marble came from Lee Marble Works at a good price because the Works quarried too much marble in anticipation of more casualties in the Spanish-American War than actually occurred.

The design has a distinctive French influence. The “ND” on both sides of the bottom of the bell tower add to the church’s individuality. It took about 4 years to build it.

This church is must-see when visiting Southbridge, MA.

I rate the Notre Dame Parish at 5.0.

A Beautiful French Church
Jul 2017
This church is a wonderful experience. My son and new daughter-in-law were married here in July, and we got the chance to see it up close. The interior is stunningly beautiful, in an almost baroque style. It is all off-white and sky blue. The windows are all stained glass in the old style; the stations of the cross are all in French; the pews are all old dark wood. Above the altar there used to be a statue of the Blessed Mother, but that was moved after the 1960s to the side altar on the left side, and a beautiful crucifix has taken her place. There is a statue of an elderly St. John Paul II at the front right side. The organ is lovely but not over-powerful for the church. It was the perfect place for a wedding!
There is a wonderful story about the exterior of the church. It was built in the early 1900s, though it looks much older. The exterior is made of stone, but the stones are actually gravestones. The U.S. government thought that the Spanish-American War would last much longer than it did and would generate many more casualties, so it had ordered many gravestones for them. When the war ended so early with few casualties, the church bought the unused gravestones to use for its exterior. They were arranged so as to be used whole, but unless you know the story, you would never guess that this beautiful exterior is made of these stones. In the tradition of the Church, it is truly a memento mori (a reminder of death and then of what lies beyond).
