Gorgeous Old Cemetary
Jun 2021 • Friends
I visited because I am interested in historic places. I was not disappointed! The cemetery housed some very old stones dating back to early Sandwich history. The cemetery itself was in a nice location overlooking a calm body of water. Hope to visit again after I look up the plot map.

A great walk back in time

A number of our relatives are buried there. They came over within a few years after the Mayflower. Growing up our family visited whenever we were in the area and had a picnic on the shore of the lake. Such a clean, well kept cemetery that holds a special place in my family's hearts.

Worth the Stop
Sep 2017 • Couples
Stopped here on our tour of historic Sandwich to see if we could locate the grave of the Rev. John Smith who built the Hoxie House. The cemetery is representative of many of the old cemeteries that dot the Cape. The cemetery is quietly set on a small point that looks across Shawme Pond with it's passing swans, ducks, and geese.

Maybe it was the time of year but I think I heard the whispering of Longfellow in the gentle breeze.

How sweet a life was his; how sweet a death!
Living, to wing with mirth the weary hours,
Or with romantic tales the heart to cheer;
Dying, to leave a memory like the breath
Of summers full of sunshine and of showers,
A grief and gladness in the atmosphere.

A very well kept cemetery with a nice view and many old stones. Swans abound in the small lake around the burial ground. Quiet and quaint.

Old cemetery

We loved walking through the cemetery and looking at all of the really old graves...there were some graves dating back to the 1700's and from the founding families of the area.

Old Town Cemetery

I happen to love old cemeteries. The tombstones are old, old, old and as always I look for a familiar name. You can find names in this cemetery that are part of the fabric of Sandwich.

How do you rate a cemetery?

Old Town Burial Ground is serene and lovely and centuries old. Many of the headstones are illegible, covered in lichen and simply worn by time. The best time to visit is in the afternoon @ 3pm. The light really helps to decipher some of the stones if you are ancestor hunting as I was. The colors are many hues of grey, new grass, ancient moss, the blue of Shawme Pond and the scarlet underwing of a scarlet tanager perched on a tomb sunning. The town has placed a memorial tablet as an homage to the unreadable ancient stones. Parking is minimal but it's a very short stroll from the center of town. I found two sets of grandparents near one another and said thank you, then left, sincerely happy to see them at rest in such an idyllic setting.

Beautiful Spot

Stop in at the Glass Museum across the way and ask for a printout of the walking tour they do about the cemetery - or schedule your trip around the tour. Very informative and made the history come alive. It's a beautiful spot on Shawme Pond and definitely worth a linger.

This cemetery needs a little TLC. There are bird droppings everywhere because it is on the lake. I didn't expect much, but would have appreciated a bench because it was very hot and hilly.
