The 30-metre mural on the (still operational) Viterra grain silos was the flagship project in Coorong District Council's arts lead regional renewal program 'Creating Coonalpyn'. Artist Guido van Helten was given the keys to Coonalpyn on 1 February 2017. five Coonalpyn Primary School children on the Viterra silos with the intention to represent Coonalpyn's 'hope for the future'.

This is one of several similar sites in the general area, including the west of Victoria. The idea brought to fruition obviously has been an economic boost to the area as there are now three seemingly prosperous businesses catering to the food needs of tourists, located on the busy highway between Melbourne and Adelaide. But be warned - our experience at the Silo Cafe (Lavazza coffee!) was that if a toilet break is needed, use the clean public facilities in the parking area near the silos (and admire the community-created mural) as there were no facilities available in the cafe.

We love seeing the Silo Art in Australia. This one is so lovely and it was great to read the plaque about how they did it all and the inspiration.

There is parking available and a cafe nearby!

The Coonalpyn Silo Art is a credit to the artist. Using youngsters of the community is a great idea and what better way to engender community pride in themselves than to see larger than life images of them on display like this. Looking at previous photos of the silos that have been submitted I see no need to add any more. This is an attraction residents of Coonalpyn can be extremely proud of.

We had to pass the silos on our journey to wherever.

The background to the silos was explained and how the artist got involved.

The statue of the artist is opposite the silos.

What a gifted man in so many ways. His use of local children as models. The enormity of the project!

I can only say what a genius.

A must see if you're in the area.

This was a quick stop for us on our way to Murray Bridge from Melbourne. It was a perfect place for the girls (3 & 6) to have a quick run and get an amazing photo of these Silo's.
We didn't stop long as we really wanted to get to Murray Bridge, but these are amazing and not to be missed.

We stopped at Coonalpyn silos on the way to Adelaide last year and it was well worth the visit. This one features some of the local school children and has a story about them and the artist at the base of the silos.
The only shop we saw had nice cakes and coffee and was benefitting from the tourists passing through, so now we want to go and see the whole silo trail.

Located by the highway with plenty of parking, toilets, cafe and bakery. Impressive silo art worth the stop.

Coonalpyn is such a small town, but it's a good place to break up your drive for a picture or 2 of the mural.

We stopped for a quick leg stretch on our way from Adelaide to Melbourne and was pleasantly surprised by the amazing murals on the silos. The murals are so detailed, such beautiful craftsmanship, we spent about 1/2 hour just admiring them! On a side point the public toilets were clean and tidy.
