The Church of the Transfiguration is the center of Community of Jesus - an ecumenical Benedictine monastic community located at Rock Harbor on the shores of Cape Cod Bay. The Community follows a daily rhythm of prayer including Eucharist and Liturgy of the Hours (sung in Gregorian chant). Constructed of Minnesota limestone, and designed by William Rawn Associates of Boston, the Church of the Transfiguration is a contemporary expression of an ancient 4th century style of architecture, and recounts the story of salvation through mosaic and fresco images, bronze, glass, and stone sculpture. The organ is a restoration and expansion of pipework from twelve organs built by the E.M. Skinner Organ Company in the early 20th century. Sunday Eucharist -- 10:00 Weekday Vespers -- 5:30pm Saturday Choral Evensong or Vespers -- 5:15pm TOURS -- Monday - Saturday at 3:00pm Organ demonstrations -- Fridays at 3:30pm Priory Books & Gifts -- Monday - Saturday 10am - 6pm(Wednesdays the Church is closed)

I have been here and had the mistresses give me a tour several times as part of a group. The organ recital was included and was very impressive. I have not heard a formal concert by either the choir or the band but apparently they are world famous and I look forward to hearing both.

There are three recommended activities when visiting this monasteriel community based on the Benedictine Christian practice. Founded and staffed by the Sisters of Jesus, the church itself is a magnificent edifice that combines traditional Roman with more modern Christian design. The first recommendation is to tour the church and the demonstration of the organization, a modern wonder of its own.... More

This is one of the most beautiful churches I have been in and I have travelled extensively. It is steeped in nature, especially Cape Cod's. The floors are covered with mosaics featuring the birds and fauna of the Cape. The nave floor is covered with mosaics with animals from a through z. Spectacular!

The grounds of this Church, and the surrounding harbor and town are lovely. They've built a community where it seems that all find a purpose and contribute to the common good. The tour is informative and led by "members" of the community who are interested in sharing their history and celebrating their present and future. Having traveled to Italy, several... More

If you can visit the church when they are a concert, don't hesitate. The brass and organ concerts are spectacular. Just seeing the inside of the church is worth the visit.

What a beautiful church! We got a tour from a very nice church member who was very helpful and kind. The craftsmanship is so outstanding. What a way to spend about an hour. Afterwards we walked out to Rock Harbor. The church Is lovely.

It was a little bit difficult for me to find as I am unfamiliar with the area and did not have a GPS. Sadly I was a little late getting there. They were very warm and welcoming and the evening vespers service was just beautiful. I am so glad I had the opportunity to attend!

After living in Orleans for over 20+ years, we finally attended a Organ Concert at this church. It was amazing. Well worth the price of admission, such talent. They have tours of the building...it is stunning. Worth a stop.

Anyone visiting will be awed by the sparkle and beauty of this church. It is not your usual church. Members have spent, no telling how much, to create a work of art that is a tribute to God. The murals are beyond words. Several in our group were not comfortable as they felt this was a cult. However, the members... More

Glad that you were able to visit the Church (and enjoy the Monastery Kitchen granola and jam!). Visiting a monastery in the US is unusual, and many are not familiar with this particular expression of Christian life. The Community of Jesus has a widely-shared lectionary, an ecumenical calendar of saints, and a published Rule of Life that is both balanced... More
