Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard Audio Tour

Knockabout Travel takes you to Martha's Vineyard, with this self-paced audio tour of the most popular town on the island. Discover the origin story of how Oak Bluffs developed from its humble beginnings as a religious camp into a summer destination for business moguls, celebrities, and US Presidents. On the tour, we discuss the development of the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association, home to the "campground" and the famed gingerbread cottages. Learn how the area around Ocean Park and Circuit Avenue was developed with tourism in mind, and how that conflicted with the original Methodist campers. Along the route, you will be introduced to some of the finer points and lesser-known history of the town, as well as places to grab lunch or a drink. The tour includes 45 minutes of narration and can be completed at a leisurely pace in about 90 minutes including brief stops at various points of interest. Audio easily streams from an embedded web player - no need to download files!

Flying horses carousel was a good time! We rode the carousel three times and my daughter got the brass ring on one ride so we got a free ride. It is a historical site that has an old school feel. The staff was all younger kids but they were all polite and helpful. They sell some snacks and there is a small arcade attached to the back side of it. It is just a block or so off the ferry, so it is easy to find. Definitely a fun stop if you have young children.

The Flying Horses would be better if the employees here were more on top of things. We didn't know if you could actually ride them or not. It appeared that you could based on the signage but the gentleman working there spent 20 minutes talking to ladies and ignored the crowed that was standing around waiting to see if we could ride or not. I totally understand talking to customers and explaining the history but you still need to interact with the other 12 people that walked in while you were talking. People ended up wandering around looking at the horses and taking pictures. We did the same. When the large group, including us, were walking out the door someone asked if they could ride and he said yes. So clearly you CAN ride but you need to ask specifically. Otherwise, the horses are old and not in the best shape but still pretty good considering their age. If you like history and/or carousels this is a place you would want to check out.

If you love carousel horses, add this location to your list. Fun for children and adults alike! They are in an enclosure and protected from the elements. Plan extra time for parking in high season.

This carousel experience, complete with brass rings to grab, is a wonderful throwback to amusement parks that existed when we were kids.

Loved hearing that this is the oldest carousel in the nation. The man working took his time to explain its history. Would love to go back again.
