This castle is a hidden little gem a bit off the beaten path. Worth the visit though - impressive architecture dating back to the Early Middle Ages. Also has facilities (restaurant, tourist facilities etc) although these seem to be closed on Monday and Tuesday.

We went here because we had the "Schloesserland Karte" - otherwise we might not even have known about it. This is a true historical gem in terms of medieval castle architecture. It's origins go back to the 12th century and it has been changed many times over the centuries but thanks to some great archeology the history of this stunning place can be retraced (at least in part). They had two great exhibitions on when we visited - and the walk through part of the castle and the burg fried (tower) told of the families who lived here. My personal favorite was the small vitrine with the ladies head dresses from the past 500 years - amazing to see such things as textiles usually don't survive. It possibly could do with a bit more english translations though. However I assume that because it is off the beaten track and there is only so much money to around that this is not a priority - but it's not a biggy.
