Popular Hiking, Swimming, Picnicking Close to Downtown Boston

I have been visiting this beautiful park for over fifty years, and I'm still finding new parts of the park to see and explore. This is definitely the best park in the greater Boston area for hiking, and leaf-looking in the fall, with miles of trails, varying from carriage roads to rocky climbs. The Skyline Trail, a tough rocky trail, was recently voted by Conde Nast Traveler's magazine as among one of the best twenty-six fall hiking trails in the US. This trail can be strenuous, as the name implies, and requires good hiking skills, and a recommended walking stick, but it is well worth the effort. The Skyline trail goes up down the peaks of the hills in the park, culminating at the top of the Great Blue Hill, at over 630 feet the highest coastal hill on the Atlantic south of the state of Maine. In the summer Houghton’s Pond, in the park, is a popular swimming area. The park also has many sizable picnic areas, and is very popular in the summer months. Plenty of parking, and a snack bar is sometimes open in the summer.

Houghtons Pond is a lovely place to visit any time of year. It boast's multiple walking or hiking trails of various distances. The trails can be a uneven path trail of 3/4 mile around the pond or multiple options climbing Blue Hills. Pick a option that works for you.

Great Fall colors and nature walks!

Wonderful spot to view Fall colors and take in the beauty of nature! Serene park which is part of the Blue Hills reservation, with several nature trails and hikes. A jewel hidden in the heart of greater Boston!

My family would always go to Houghton's Pond when I was growing up. Now I bring my children and we just love our visits here.

High Bacteria Count
Aug 2019 • Family
We brought our grandchildren today to the Pond for the first time this summer. We saw red flags at each lifeguard station with the symbol for "no swimming",but people were swimming and the lifeguards were on duty. When we asked about the flags the lifeguard said that the Pond had a high Bacteria count. We of course left disappointed but we still wonder why the Pond wasn't closed and why were the .poor lifeguards forced to stay on duty risking illness? We also are disturbed by the condition of the area and lack of maintenance .The nature boardwalk has been closed for months for no apparent reason. What is going on at Houghtons Pond ?

It was my first visit to Houghton’s pond today and I was so excited to finally get out to the blue hills from the city. They had a concession stand, families bbqing and lifeguards. It wasn’t so bad initially but the demographic leaves much to be desired. There were people in the water saying they were happy there were very few “blue eyed devils” at the pond which was a new term to me. We decided to leave shortly after realizing we really can’t all get along and we decided to go elsewhere to spend the hot summer day.

Disappointing environment
Jul 2019 • Couples
The beach is not bad, but the environment is overcrowded with loud music and people seeking to bring a bit of Miami to an otherwise beautiful location.

Dog's on the leash are welcome. We thought this was a really nice and well kept park and enjoyed sending time with our pup here.

Nice little beach - for the amount of visitors it stay relatively clean. We all need to band together to keep it that way!

Great hiking
May 2018 • Friends
Safe, clean, good calm beach for young kids. Not too crowded. Plenty of parking. And not too far from some good ice cream in Hyde Park before the trip home!
