We were in Marblehead this weekend and tried to visit Fort Sewall. It is closed for renovations and will be closed for sometime. We were a bit disappointed that we couldn't visit the site.

Closed seemingly for repairs
Oct 2020 • Couples
Drove here today to look at the historical fort only to find that it was completely closed and no place to park. Not sure if it’s closed for repairs or what the situation is but could not get anywhere near it.

If you have time stop and take a look around
Nov 2019
This is an old earthworks fort that has a great view of the harbor and surrounding shoreline. It seems like a terrific place to have a picnic. We saw the whole place in about 15 minutes. There are no facilities here so it is really just a great spot to catch the views.

the views are amazing

The fort (established in 1644) is small but I enjoyed walking around it. I think the best thing was the views of the harbor and the homes along the harbor. There is also a walking path along the rocky cliffs. My husband and I sat on the rocks and just soaked in the views while listening to the waves crash against the rocks.

It was quiet and peaceful there making it a perfect place to just sit and enjoy the beauty surrounding the fort. There was a door that looked like it could have been an entrance to the fort but it was locked and it didn't look like it had been opened in a very long time so you probably can't go inside. But, the walled side of the fort did allow you to go inside some of the rooms I think were the barracks.

Very Nice. Great Ocean and Harbor Views
May 2019
I love Fort Sewall for just lying in the sun or reading or maybe as the destination for a run or a bicycle ride. Mostly I go in the summer but it's nice anytime. Great in winter after a snowfall. It's right at the mouth of the harbor, directly across from Chandler Hovey Park out on the Neck. Makes sense they'd build the fort at the mouth of the harbor. I like to give directions but this place is not easy to get to, you need to cross the entire breadth of Marblehead to get here so a map is really needed or GPS. Parking right at the Fort is very limited. If you see a space on the street as you near the Fort take it. The whole area is beautiful, nice quaint houses and a few restaurants so walking about is fun. There's a small beach right at the entrance to the park but it disappears at high tide. There are all sorts of old fortifications here but nothing really dramatic, it's small. A few paths you can walk about tho the whole place is only about 1/4 mile by 1/4 mile. As I say you can walk to nice eating places and pubs.

Beautiful Views of the City
Oct 2019
Fort Sewall is a walk back in time. Fascinating history and established before America was America. It’s an important piece of history and we all enjoyed the visit and learning what we did about the area. Beautiful views of the city and ocean. We soaked up the peaceful views after a busy day.

Park near the Town Hall and walk here...

You will not be disappointed! Historic house heaven is Marblehead- 300 + plaqued houses stating who the house was built for.
Then culminate your walk at Fort Sewall to gain some perspective and learn some history.
Fabulous views back and across the water.
I could spend hours here taking in the architecture and water scenery.
