How do you know where you are?

So how do you know where you are, if you don't know where you have come from. Here one can get a good idea about the history of industrialization in this country and how we came from there to here

Fascinating look at the area's industrial history

If this museum did not exist someone would need to create it. The local area around the MOIH is dotted with old mills and factories. This museum keeps the history of the vibrant work the area did contributing to the industrialization of the United States. The best activity here is the hands on aspect. You can put threads on a nut and bolt or learn about lathes and other machinery. I took a dozen high school seniors with me and they enjoyed it immensely and learned a lot.

More interesting than you can imagine

Our group of retired couples thoroughly enjoyed this visit. It is in the buildings of a former iron works, making incredible tools from early 1800s until times changes and factories moved South etc. You really see how things were then. The exhibits were not flashy like many museums, bur very authentic. So many machines, maps, stories and true look into what it was like in the 1800s. Then, this part of Massachusetts was an industrial powerhouse. The guide was great: he is local and seemed to perhaps personal know relatives of the founders. He also was very engaging, e.g., making me take a chance at using a tool to make a screw! Small, but the hour went by fast. We were there on a very freezing day in January, and it was a bit cool inside.

They paint a true picture of what was happening in the area during those times. They have a wealth of knowledge and can answer any question posed. 1 hour should be long enough to plan for a visit.

Hands-on history!

This old mill building tells the story of industrial history in a very visceral way, with views of the water, great displays, and a whole room full of tools you can use (with supervision, of course).

It was well done but not my area of interest

Nicely done little museum on the industrial history of the region. I am not a huge fan of industrial history, but stopped because I like learning about the history of the area. The volunteers there are great older guys that know alot and are more than willing to go above and beyond to teach you things. They had us engage in tap and dye work so it was more interactive and engaging. It was just a little boring for me since I don't know or have a ton of interest in the subject matter.

It was a great tour by two wonderful and very knowledgeable museum staff. They were informative and even let me try different tools. The staff taught me how to make screws and bolts with the tap and die machine.

Town as Weapon, Tool, and Engine

Follow the passionate volunteer guide from quality cutlery, dye, metal work, cathode tube, and other displays in the heart if what might look like beautiful nowhere if you fail to stop, look around, and ask questions. Find out how stubbornness, a competitive spirit, engineering, and entrepreneurship stole entire industries from across the seas, won wars, harnessed the power of rivers, and created towns to use as both weapon and tool.

great place to learn

I brought my kids here and they loved it. Me to! Its a great place to learn about the local history. Its even in an old mill type building. There are many friends that volunteer here and make it a great place to learn about the things that were manufactured in the area.

Wonderful historical gem!

This museum has so much local history (It's in an old manufacturing building, tucked next to a river), students visit from local schools to learn more about their community, and their grandparents come to see bits of their own past - highlights include some of the larger manufacturing that was in the area, including many that no longer exist - some great displays and explanations about the importance of what was being made (including during WWII), as well as how these companies supported whole communities. The locals who volunteer are dedicated and knowledgeable. The museum provides a great tool to help history become more real to young people. My kids loved it! They looked for their own family members in the photographs.
