The Mahaiwe Theater opened in September 1905 and is one of the oldest surviving theaters in the country. In its early years, the theater presented touring vaudeville acts and performers such as John Philip Sousa. It was transformed into a movie palace in 1930 and has been in continuous operation for over 100 years. Celebrated for its splendid acoustics, the theatre has played an important role in the life of the area. The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center was formed in December 2002 and launched its first six-month presenting season with a Centennial Celebration in May 2005. The theater has been newly restored, with great attention to historical detail, at a cost of over $9 million. The restoration was overseen by noted architect, Hugh Hardy, with engineering and construction by skilled Berkshire craftspeople and artisans. The theater is a recipient of support from Save America’s Treasures, the historical restoration has been certified by the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the National Park Service. In addition, The Mahaiwe is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places! The Mahaiwe is now a unique year-round performing arts center presenting music, dance, theater, opera, and classic films in the southern Berkshires. The theater seats almost 700 audience members. We have brought hundreds of live events as well as classic films, and the Metropolitan Opera “Live in HD” broadcasts to the theater’s stage and screen as well as hosted dozens of performances presented by others. The Mahaiwe strives to welcome the broadest possible community into our theater on an ongoing basis.

I have grown up in Great Barrington, literally born and raised and worked here and ever since I was little the Mahaiwe has been here. I remember watching the 4 hour epic Dances with Wolves and even recently Casablanca when it returned for a single showing on the big screen. My words can not give justice to the feel and... More

We attend Mahaiwe events frequently throughout the year and have never been disappointed. MOMIX was particularly wonderful: unique choreography, stagecraft and superb dancing. Much better to see it at MAHAIWE than in larger New York Theaters.

This was a phenomenal performance. Theatre beautiful. Show beyond words. Not a bad seat in the house. Go see at any cost.

A absolute gem of a venue to watch a show or performance. Great sound and viewing from most seating. An intimate experience to see major acts and some movies.

The heat in the balcony was unbearable by the middle of the first act, even though I was not overdressed. Although some people stood, this was not an option for me. I heard three people complain about the heat. We left at Intermission, reluctantly, because I was not well enough to tolerate it. We would love to have seen the... More

I'm a part time resident of Great Barrington, and I love it when they have something going on that I want to attend. I think it seats fewer than 700, and they book some wonderful performers. I would suggest if you're coming from out of town get to GB early because parking can be VERY challenging within walking distance of... More

We are so lucky in Great Barrington that this old theater was lovingly restored and is now home to a vibrant selection of fine arts. The theater hosts opera performances in HD from the Met and Europe, live musical performances, and movies. Even movies like "Casablanca", which we have seen over and over again on TV are a totally different... More

I went to The Mahaiwe on August 23rd to see An Evening with Kenny Aronoff. I was struck by the beauty of the theater and the sound quality was excellent. It was a very special concert where the artist spoke to the audience in between performing his music, telling stories about various rock stars he'd worked with throughout his career.... More

Lots of worldclass acts stop here -- John Pizzarelli, Eric Burdon, Graham Nash, to name a few! It's a charming old theater with a lovely interior.

Watching Graham Nash from the 4 row in the balcony! The whole venue is great, small and acoustically excellent!
