My wife and I went on a 9 hour reduced capacity fishing trip 9/8/20. 20 fishing guests spread out across a large boat for 45 guests.
Beautiful views. We caught 15 fish and took home 8 large haddock keepers. Scenery, Weather and People were great. Staff was professional, friendly and helpful. We Highly recommend Yankee Fleet and will do it again soon.

Took my Girl Friend and her two teenagers on the Yankee Patriot with Capt John and crew Dave and George for the full day fishing trip leaving at 7am this morning. Weather was awesome, seas were calm and we caught lots of fish, many types! Highlight of the day was GF's daughter catching a blue fish and it really gave her a thrill and a fight.

Pros: Fantastic Weather and fishing. Definitely a great time had by all. The crew was very helpful. Did our homework and brought our own drinks and food.

Cons: Capt John got a little too gruff with the customers when the dog sharks kept taking the bait and running circles around the boat tangling lines! Dog fish are a pain, they tangle lines and you can't keep them. It is not the customers fault that the dog fish were biting! Bathrooms are rustic! limited food available.

Enjoy,

I fish all the time, so what I care about the most is whether the captain maximizes opportunitues for guests to catch fish. And that's exactly what they did during my trip, my friends and I each limited out on haddock and caught lots of cod that had to be returned to the sea. The mates were excellent, they untangled my line 6-7 times without damaging the braid. They kept bringing fresh bait. They also filleted everyone's catch during the ride back home. They were late to gaff on one occasion and I lost a large haddock, but that's life. The boat was full, but the operation ran pretty smoothly. There is a galley on board with food and drinks. The bathroom was clean. Long deep sea fishing trips are not for everyone. And you are complaining about renting $175 worth of equipment for $7, paying $1 to someone to fillet your fresh catch, or having to pay $3 for a 16 oz. sinker that costs $4 at the tackle shop, then I don't know what to tell you. As someone who has learned to have low expectations for catching fish, I was very pleased and will certainly do the trip again.

Yankee Fleet has always been my first choice for whale watching on the North Shore. So when my children and out of town family asked to go deep sea fishing, I didn't hesitate to book a trip with them. Our experience was absolutely appalling! The crew on board was incredibly rude and made my son feel like he was an idiot for not knowing how to operate the rod and reel. At first the catch was mostly juvenile fish which the crew made a point of handling extensively and then laughed when they threw them back and almost all died right there on the surface of the water. As the afternoon went on, many dogfish were being caught. My cousin caught a large dogfish that couldn't be knocked off of the line so a crewman had to bring it on board and remove the hook. He then asked us if we would like to feel it's skin because it felt like sandpaper. When my cousin hesitated he took the dogfish, bent it in half and started rubbing the poor creature as hard and fast as he could on the rail of the boat. We were horrified and asked him to stop, but he refused laughing as he continued with this behavior until blood started pouring from the fish's gills. Then he just tossed the poor animal back into the water leaving a huge puddle of blood on the deck of the boat. My children were totally traumatized! I am absolutely horrified that Yankee Fleet has fallen to this level. I will never return and I urge anyone who reads this to look elsewhere for deep sea fishing charters. There are many in the area. Oh, I forgot to mention that while they were killing almost every fish they touched, the crew was also smoking. A truly awful experience!!

We live 5 hours away and had planned and reserved this trip a few MONTHS in advance. After taking time off work and paying for hotels, Yankee Fleet called us 12 hours before our trip and told us that not enough people had signed up for that day and therefore the trip was not going to be 'profitable' for them and the trip was cancelled. I told them how much I had arranged for this trip and that we had already paid for hotels (and now had no reason to make the trip), but they did not care. I was really upset that they cared more about making $ than making their customers happy. They were not apologetic at all. Just imagine the stress of planning for months around this trip and then finding out the day before that it's cancelled. Not our fault not enough people signed up, we shouldn't have had to lose out because of it! Just don't count on this boat.

My wife and I booked a full day with Yankee Fleet in hopes of a fun day on the ocean. After we paid, the people inside disappeared and we had to look around for where we were supposed to go. Fortunately others were walking down to the boat and we found our boat. Once we got on the boat, no one said anything to us...we had to ask them where we were supposed to get our rods. This was after walking around the boat two or three times, not finding anyone who worked there.

We were given no instructions as to how to operate the reels. That wasn't a problem for the two of us as we fish regularly around home, however if there was anyone on board who hasn't spent much time on the water they would be lost.

On the phone when booking, we were told $75 per person and that included everything we would need. That is simply not true. Need a towel while fishing? $1. Need a new sinker and hook if you broke the line? $2 Need a burlap sack with ice to store your catch? $1. Need a plastic sack to store your fillets? $1. Oh, and like it or not, they fillet your catch for...you guessed it. $1/fish. The crew member who filleted my fish wasted a bunch of meat and when I rinsed the fillets to put in the freezer back at the motel I found lots of rib bones still there. What a joke, not even close to everything included in the trip.

My wife, who is four months pregnant, had to spend probably half of the day not fishing because the crew and others on the boat smoked. When the crew members, one of them the smoker, asked my wife why she wasn't fishing she replied that she was pregnant and had to avoid second-hand smoke. His reply, "there's always the upper deck." YOU CAN'T FISH OFF THE TOP DECK. The other crew member joked about his mother smoking while she was pregnant and he turned out fine. In other words, even though we were paying their wages, they weren't going to change anything, we were going to have to miss fishing time.

We did catch fish on the trip, it was slow for us on the side of the boat we were on...but that's fishing and has nothing to do with the negativity of the review. My issues were the rudeness of the crew and the false advertising from the lady who we booked through on the phone. The other patrons on the boat were great company, which is good since you are literally elbow-to-elbow with them.

To finish on a positive note, the crew was good about untangling lines when it happened (quite often), unhooking fish, and refilling the bait containers.

If we do make another trip to the East coast we'll definitely be going elsewhere for deep sea fishing.

They are in a position where they can get their boats filled (overfilled) with passengers almost all of the time due to their heavy national advertising so without making a good faith effort to get the boat on some fish, the fisherman is brought to areas of water that produce little fish (not counting sand sharks). Their prices are high and their interest in having passengers return is above seeing that they catch fish. There are many choices for which boat to go on within a 25 mile radius. It is best to seek an alternate port to go fishing.

I have been fishing with Yankee fleet for over 25 years. My father first brought me when I was 12. I try to go deep sea fishing at least once a year because it’s fun and is a great way to spend some time on the water. In the early years of fishing, I had seen people catch so many fish they are scattered around on the boat. Now, consider yourself lucky if you catch anything, let alone take home one keeper. The price of a ticket keeps going up too.
I went with Yankee Fleet for my annual fishing adventure and aboard the Yankee Patriot over the July 20th 2012 weekend. The overall catch for the boat was very poor- most people either caught juvenile fish that were too small or they caught nothing at all. Some people got lucky and caught a few keepers, most people didn’t not.
There were two mates on board (George and one other young guy), plus the captain (Tom). They cut up the bait, would come around and help people take fish off the lines, untangle people’s lines, and clean the fish. They were also crude and rude. In the afternoon, the dog fish started coming around, and that’s all that most people were catching. I personally saw the mates break the necks of some of the dogfish on purpose and then throw them back in the ocean to drown and die. They did this in front of young kids. The captain also wanted to slice open the belly of the pregnant dogfish female to watch the juvenile fish fall out. What kind of example are they setting? Completely appalling! There is no need to kill fish just for the fun of it, and just because dogfish are not the intended catch.

....this is the trip for you (wink). This is our second time deep sea fishing with Yankee Fleet in about five years. The boat is fine, the staff is fine....but WHERE ARE THE FISH?! Both time we've gone (husband and two children), we have caught an abundance of dogfish (little sharks?) that are not kept. Both times only one member of our family actually caught something you can keep. Both times it wasn't even enough to make a family dinner. One thing that definitely contributes to this is that they obviously overbook the trips so that you are fishing too close to other people and ending up with lines getting caught. It takes time to untangle, time to move to new spots for fishing (to get away from dogfish OR to find a place with actual fish) so that the actual time with your hook in the water (on a half day tour) is less than an hour. Though we had fun, the lack of actual fish to take home is a disappointment.

I have been fishing with my son since he was 6. He is 17 and this was to be our last outing before college. We usually have fished off cape cod waters but decided to try a full day trip with Yankee.
So the reviews you read about tangled lines and 1/2 hr plus waiting for a rude crew to assist you are accurate. They dollar you to death...that is true. Seemed to only care about their regulars - that also is true. Made my son and friend have the Worst fishing experience ever...unfortunately very true.
My wife wanted a picture of my son holding his fish - never happened! Crew had to reel up catch and were impatient, curt and condescending! Thought this was going to be a day we would always remember. But thanks to the captain and crew at Yankee we are just trying to forget!
I wrote a letter to Emma (their customer service contact for Yankee) explaining my issues - that was about 2 weeks ago and she did not even take the time to reply!
Be smarter than I was... stay away! Save your hard earned money and find a fleet that cares about their customers more than they do the money!
