About
The Martha's Vineyard Museum is privileged to be the steward of three of the Island's lighthouses. The East Chop, Edgartown, and Gay Head lighthouses are not only historic reminders of a bygone age, but are working beacons that still send a light out into the night. Beyond their important functional role, these structures also offer visitors spectacular views of the breathtaking beauty of Vineyard Sound, the simple elegance of Edgartown Harbor & Chappaquiddick, and the majestic cliffs of Aquinnah. Major renovations completed in 2007, including installation of a staircase to the lantern room, allow the interior of the Edgartown Light to be open to visitors. A lighthouse keeper will be available and the doors will be open during designated hours. Parking is available, but limited, on North Water Street. The Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA) busses drop off on Church Street in Edgartown. It is a 5-10 minute walk to the lighthouse from this location.

The Edgartown light is a beautiful light in - you guessed it - Edgartown. There is a short walk through coastal shrubbery and bay roses to get to a serene light standing on its own on the shores of a beach. If you are there before mid-afternoon, pay a small fee to climb the light and view all of its features, as well as beautiful views. Walk around the beach (it can be windy) and enjoy what feels like absolutely pristine shores. Worth a visit while you are on the island.

We made this our goal for Edgartown on our day trip around Martha’s Vineyard. Arriving via the Island Queen Ferry at Oak Bluffs, we bought a bus day pass. Bus # 13 took us to Edgartown. The driver said to make a right on Winter St., a left on North Water St. and “voila”, we spotted this beautiful 1875 45’ lighthouse sitting at the end of a sand spit.
Returning to the bus stop we saw many pretty homes, the 1891 Harbor View Hotel, the Chappy Ferry and the Giant Pagoda Tree(brought back in a flower pot by Captain Thomas Milton in 1837) on the nearly 2 mile round trip. Great destination.

Scenic, tranquil, picturesque. We visited this location with our pup and watched seagulls dropping shells. No crowds (off-season) and easily accessible down trail in a neighborhood. Free on-street parking was a little hard to find but doable.

It was great because it was off season and not crowded. It was also nice because you could walk out right to the lighthouse, too. Unfortunately, the day I had was very foggy and you could hardly see the lighthouse even right up next to it. If you’re on the island, be sure to walk out to the lighthouse and hopefully you’ll have a clearer day than I did.

Iconic lighthouse of Edgartown, was the perfect foreground for morning sunrises from our hotel. The adjacent beach is clean and uncrowded, but located on the Edgartown boat channel...convenient for a quick visit, but not where I'd plan a beach-day.

The Edgartown Harbor Lighthouse at the end of north Water Street defines the entrance to the Harbor. The harbor is large and entered through a modest sized channel on the North side of Edgartown.
This lighthouse is certainly worth a photo stop.

The lighthouse sits on a small stretch of land off the main road of Edgartown. The view from the road is stunning but as you make the small trek down through the beach shrubbery to reach the lighthouse, the views become even more spectacular. Aside from being a beacon of light, the lighthouse is a children’s memorial and the cobble stones surrounding the base of the lighthouse is a remembrance of a child. It is really beautiful and touching tribute.

Not a real hike, but a wonderful walk at the ocean. Sand paths lead to the beach and lighthouse. Beautiful ocean views and peaceful surroundings. Perfect for photos or plein air painting. Then we had lunch at the Seafood Shanty. Marvelous day!

Just a short jaunt down a sandy path, through the dunes, to the water's edge. The approach to Edgartown Lighthouse is filled with wildflowers & beauty, then opens up onto a marina path that leads directly to the lighthouse. It's a short jaunt, but definitely worth it! This path is accessed across from Harbor View Hotel.

My family and I spent the week vacationing on Martha's Vineyard this July 2017. We ate at wonderful restaurants, spent time on the beach and touring the island. Although every moment of our vacation was great, visiting the Edgartown Lighthouse was simply monumental. Take a walk to the top and you will never regret it. If he's available, spend some time chatting with Wayde Johnson because you will leave happier than you came and even more enlightened. Wayde was lovely and full of information.I can't put my finger on exactly what it was, but I know that we left with a different perspective and will never regret the walk to the lighthouse. I highly recommend visiting.
