This is a lovely small garden with a nice pond. We made the pit stop here while bike riding. I wouldn't say it was necessarily a must-see tourist attraction, however, if you are riding your bike to the beach on Chappaquiddick Island it's certainly worthy of a pitstop. It was quite lovely, and quaint, and we enjoyed watching the turtles and fish in the pond. The groundskeeper was so patient, kind, and super informative about all the plants.

We enjoyed our TOUR to the Japanese garden. The garden is easy to walk, very beautiful and there are a few benches a long the way. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. We were able to appreciate all the work that goes into maintaining the garden and learning about the trees. I was told that if you pay the entrance of this garden you could also be able to visit the beaches for free. Downside; There is a lot of mosquitos. Make sure to wear bug spray!!

If you go to Chappaquiddick Island, don't pass up the Mytoi Gardens. To get there, you have to take a small ferry. We took our bicycles and it was an easy ride to the gardens. The main road is paved but it does turn to a dirt road so don't be alarmed.
The gardens will be on your left. It was seriously so beautiful even in early May. I would love to go back in the summer to see it fully awake.

I should have read wdee515's review. Mytoi is a mosquito nightmare. Although well intentioned, Mytoi's pond is a mosquito breeding ground. The mosquitos around Mytoi have a radius that (when we visited in August) extends onto Dike Road. The pond needs to have mosquito predators, or it needs to get filled in with rocks.
One nice thing is that admission to Mytoi also covers admission to the beach on the east of the Dike Bridge, which is a clean, endless, and peaceful retreat. On our way back from the beach, we had to jog past Mytoi to avoid getting swarmed by mosquitos.

Meh. It wasn't beautiful or picturesque. Maybe it was because it was October and the hot Summer made everything brown. Also, the porta potties weren't serviced well. Maybe its best to go when everything is in bloom

A nice garden to spend a quiet afternoon in — the grounds are well maintained and perfect for still life portrait photography.
Many of the flowers were still in bloom during our visit, and still very much so beautiful.
The garden is not a “must see” by any means, but certainly a great way to enjoy a few hours to yourself and away from the busy-ness of the vineyard.

Don't let the dirt road put you off, the garden is down there. Not huge but lots of turns and nooks to seem bigger, beautiful plants, ponds and places to sit a while. Fee covers beach further down road as well. We rode our bikes after crossing the ferry. Very doable, cars go slowly, dirt not too bad when they pass. Beach beautiful, good day trip, bring lunch.

Mytoi Japanese Gardens, a serene garden of green beauty. Only way to get here is by a 30 second ferry ride from Edgartown, MA. Once off the ferry, it's a 10 minute drive to the gardens. There is no charge for admission and there are large snapping turtles and fish to look at. Also the trees and plants are best viewed in strategically located benches. Perfect for picture taking. The admission staff is friendly and informative. A great little side trip.

It takes effort to get there - the little ferry from Edgartown to Chappy and then a bike ride or walk to Mytoi but it's worth it. Combine it with one of the Trustees of Reservations naturalists' tours and it's a great day!

...unless you’re quite young and fit, or it’s not too hot outside. We’re 57 and rented bikes in Edgartown, then rode the Chappy ferry and biked to Mytoi. It was a hot day and the last half-mile was on a sandy, slippery road that was frustrating and difficult to ride on. The gardens were OK — peaceful, at least — but there are no facilities other than port-a-potties, which I HATE. I don’t think it would kill them to put in decent restrooms.

I plan to take the ferry and drive my Corolla to the Mytoi Garden. Is this possible? I’ve heard the road is not paved and you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Is this true?

Sorry- just saw this. Your car can get there fine. The final portion of road is sand but I rode my bike over it and many other cars were there as well.

Just visited their website and saw a dog symbol with a slash through it, so no pets - sorry!

How do I get there by public transportation?
Written May 30, 2017
You can rent a bike and take the Chappell ferry over and ride bike to Mytoi. You could walk but it may be a mile or so from ferry dock

An hour is a fair amount of time; however it truly depends on the group size, age and interest in botany or landscape architecture or simple joy and peace of beauty and meditation. Each season lends its own perspectives and pleasures...........

Hi Nilda - exactly what the reviewer above mentioned. Mytoi is a quick hop, skip and jump to Edgartown, so that's the place to look for places to stay.
