We went here after reading there was an easy one mile loop to walk. It turned out to be a bit much for us over age 60 people. Lots of big roots, branches, and rocks to navigate, and we found it difficult. Seemed like more like two miles. Won’t be able to do that again, but I would go back to look at the gardens.

I visited this property on a day when the house was not open but the garden was. There appeared to be a lot of work going on on the grounds, and the gardens were quite " blousy" but pleasant for strolling, with some woody trails available. The house sounds wonderful. I read in the flyer that I picked up that it is lush with beautiful carvings salvaged from a mansion in South Carolina, and that the wallpaper and murals reflect the natural world. The Sedgwick's, the original owners, were creative and prolific horticulturalists who worked to increase and expand the plantings on the property, and to design the gardens and house into a comfortable, productive, and inviting home. My plan is to try to catch a tour when one comes around next season.

Few times a year they have plant sales Great opportunity to explore the property and buy you plsnts for either your vegetable garden or increase your perennial beds Usually quite busy during the sales and parking can be a problem but if your patient enough you can get some great plants. Beautiful grounds belongs to the trustee reservations group

I read about this place as a "hidden gem" of Massachusetts and truly it is. We visited on a Friday in August mid-day and had the gardens to ourselves. The gardens have been designed as separate "rooms," with the effect that when you walk just a few steps you find you are in a totally different private space. This is wonderful for exploring as a family or a group - you can discover your own space and be in quiet solitude while still being near the others. (If you go with younger children, like in the 3-7 age range, you could lose track of them pretty quickly.) There are lots of quiet shady places to sit. We didn't try the forest trails on this visit but I would definitely go back to try them. I couldn't find much information about tours of the house, not sure whether it's open to the public at all.
In August the lotus in the ponds are in bloom and they are amazing.
Parking and entry are free.

I am fortunate enough to live within walking distance of Long Hill and I try to walk there everyday in good weather. Aptly named, there is a very long hill that leads you by a children's garden, hen house, and a field where vegetables are grown. The long driveway up the moderate hill takes you by lilac bushes and crab apple trees which in full bloom are magnificent. When you arrive at the top, the hill levels out and you see a stately brick house which was the original owner's summer house. The estate was used as a summer retreat and a gentleman's farm. You are invited to visit the beautiful extensive gardens behind the house. Dogs are welcome on leash (be considerate and pick up after your dog). There are also some walking trails. the staff there keeps a board which informs visitors which plants are in bloom.

This is a gem for all kinds of different things - photography, picnics, relaxing, hiking and just enjoying nature. Highly recommended for residents as well as Beverly guests!

I live locally and visit at least once a year. It's a wonderful combination of beautifully landscaped gardens and ponds with hidden architectural elements. There are some low-key trails around the property and worth exploring. I've strangely never been on a tour inside the house. Everything is at its peak in June (including the frogs :)) and would recommend visiting then, in May when the apple trees along the "long hill" are in bloom or the dead of winter when it's quiet and reflective. There's also an amazing organization called the The Food Project that works with local teens on a sustainable farm at the beginning of the property.

We have visited other Trustees sites, but found this one a little disappointing.
Admittedly, it is late in the spring blooming season, and a number of flowers and trees were in bloom. However, the description of the garden led on to expect more. It seemed that they needed considerable maintenance.
The trails seemed a little rustic for someone with a bad knee. But they could be fun for kids or other people.
It should be noted that the grounds are free.
We knew that the house was not open. It is hoped that at some point it will be restored and open to the public.

Beautiful and Peaceful, this lovely property offers the world weary a respite form the busyness of everyday stresses and reaches out to embrace one with all the majesty of nature. The Federal style home and surrounding gardens are beautiful in any season. We often take our dog up the hill (on leash) and see what surprises mother nature has to offer us.
