Backyard Beekeeping: A Day in the Apiary

This unique hands-on experience is the best way to learn about the importance of honeybees! We will suit up and open up the hive to see how bees live, work, and produce honey. You will definitely leave with greater knowledge and understanding of our pollinator friends and the inner workings of a honeybee colony.

First started visiting this great zoo back in 1999 while living on the Eastern Shore for a few years and raising our family. The variety of animals as well as programming are top notch, especially for a donation based facility. Fast forward 20+ years and it has maintained its charm as well as commitment to both the residents as well as surrounding community.

My husband had a random Sunday off for the first time in a long time, so we used the free morning to head to the Salisbury Zoo. This zoo is free, so right off the bat, the price is fantastic to get in. The zoo had a lot of sections roped off, so you could only walk around the zoo in one direction. Unfortunately, due to covid, some of the zoo was blocked off, so their was no access to the spider monkeys, jaguar or reptiles. Despite the negatives, a lot of animals were active including the Andean bears, flamingoes, bison, birds, alpacas, and wallaby's - those are just a few of the animals that the Salisbury Zoo has to offer. For the size of the zoo and the size of town it's in, it had a good variety to offer. The zoo offers a small gift shop. We took about 45 minutes to make it through the zoo and just because, we went through the whole zoo a second time. Make sure to pay attention to the current times as they close for an 1.5 hours to clean. Upon leaving, I did notice a few who arrived 20 minutes before the Covid cleaning closing and did not seem very happy.

Quick stop on our way home, but turned into an afternoon outside. This adventurous niche in Salisbury was more than we expected. The Black Bears put on a show that kept our kids entertained, and to see Bison was truly amazing!
