We’ve been to Lake Needwood several times, and have found it to be overrun with activity and less intimate than we normally like. . .

To address this, we decided NOT to drive into the park or bike on the northbound trail that has been our normal course. Instead, we parked at True Respite Brewery off E. Gude Drive and hiked the hilly 1.25-mile long trail to the southeast side of the Lake, which places you on a shaded trail away from the hustle and bustle of weekend family picnics. IT WAS WONDERFUL. After the hike, you can also visit the True Respite Brewery and keep your unconventional outing going in the unassuming office park you started from.

The scenery, lakes, picnic areas, all quite beautiful. However, parking is limited, and at least half the cars in/around the parking lot were ticketed with $50 tickets during my visit, because they parked along the edge of the parking lot or off the roadside. There weren't any No Parking signs to discourage this parking, so tickets came as a shock to all.

When the kids were small, we took them to Lake Needwood for family picnics. You can rent a canoe or paddle boat or do some light fishing. You can also tour the lake on a boat that leaves periodically. It's a restful place with some tables, bathrooms, covered pavilions. Also has a nice path to walk. Lots to do . Also lovely to just sit and look at the lake.

I took my kids here to go paddleboarding. The boat house staff were pretty condescending and were poorly trained teenagers. I was told there was no swimming or wading. This confused me at a lake so I asked three different times if we could at least dip in to cool off or walk in the water on one of the beaches. Each time, the answer was a blunt "no" without explanation. We paid our $5 per board to launch our boats and the staff didn't even bother to move the rental kayaks off the landing they told us to use. We had no room to launch. After going back again to ask them to move the boats, they watched as we waded in the water to get on our boards. They also knew we had our feet in the water and legs as we paddled around. The water looked pretty nasty with clumps of algae everywhere. Turns out there was a valid reason for not being allowed in the water. It's potentially TOXIC! We did a little digging after our trip and found out that this lake has been contaminated with toxic blue algae for the last 7 years. There were no signs posted and the staff never once mentioned the possibility of the water being dangerous. A news article from last year said to avoid direct contact with the water. We all got wet and we all had our feet in the water (it's kind of hard NOT to on paddleboards, which the staff not only knew about but watched as we got on our boards). I called the director the next day and they did a little looking to determine if the lake has reached dangerous levels yet. They currently don't THINK it's dangerous but as I told him, shouldn't the staff have told me at least once out of the 3 times I asked that the reason there is no swimming or wading was the potential for dangerous bacteria?? That would've been a pertinent piece of information that would definitely have changed our decision to take the family on a lake where we were definitely going to come in direct contact with the water. We will never go back and as for the rest of the lake, it was pretty small and I guess it's ok for fishing if you don't mind the possibility of contamination? Never again. I do not recommend. Rude staff, small lake, & dangerous water.

Normally this would be a five star public park but "Visitors Urged to Use Caution and Avoid Ingesting Water at Lake Needwood Due to Elevated Microcystin Levels.
Microcystin, a toxic substance produced by blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), has been detected in Lake Needwood. Water that contains microcystin can cause severe liver damage if ingested. Please avoid all contact with the lake water, and do not allow dogs or other pets to swim in or drink from the lake. Swimming is prohibited at all times in Lake Needwood." If water activity is your objective, I would recommend Senaca Creek State Park as an alternative.

This is a nice park, so I was super excited to explore the trails. But I won't be back to walk or jog. Ran into a copperhead snake on my third visit - really scary!

The bacterial infestation has made it hard to take my dogs and kids there anymore. 5 years ago this was a great park to go to but now it has become more neglected so that we rarely go even living just 10 mins from it.

Needwood is a very pretty small lake that has areas for picnics and rental of canoes, kayaks and rowboats. Worms for fishing ae available, but there is no fishing pier and few trophy catches, if any. In autumn, the shoreline is gorgeous, but there are signs that say to not touch the water because of some kind of algae.

There's a lot you can do around here, from ziplining close by to renting a boat or kayak... Picnic or bbq... Talk a walk along the trail around the lake. This spot is a nice gem when you want to get outdoors

I have been to this park and lake more times than I can count. We even had a memorial for a dear friend here too. Being central to many places I go on any given day, I like to do a drive through from time to time. Winter isn't the best here, everything is sort of gloomy. However, in spring, summer and fall it is absolutely gorgeous there.
