On the 4th of Aug 2012, my wife and I joined a group of adventurers to kayak the Zambesi River in Zimbawe. We kayak pretty regularly in Perth, Western Australia and have kayaked in Prince William Sound in Alaska, Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, in Sabah/Sarawak etc. Since we were at Victoria Falls, we decided to sign up for kayaking the Zambezi. We have heard so much about this romantic river made famous by the renown trumpeter, Eddie Calvert, with his rendition of "Zambezi".

It was a very cold morning, we were ill prepared for the cold, when we drove from Vic Falls Campsite to the launching point in the Zimbawe National Park. Along the way we spotted some great wildlife. We had a quick simple breakfast and started our paddle at about 8 am. The were 6 kayaks/canoes on the water.

We kayaked for about 3 hours through some challenging Grade 1 and 2 Rapids and we were close to capsizing on a few occassions but we manage to survive. We sighted some beautiful water birds and birds of prey not to mention the crocodiles and hippos along the way. Seeing the birds, crocodiles and the hippos was an unique experience for us because we never seen such an array of wildlife in our paddling life. It was an experience to behold and savour for the rest of our lives.

We ended the paddle with a lunch stop which we enjoyed thoroughly and drove back to our campsite at about 12 noon.

It was time well spent and our guides were excellent. We met travellers from different parts of the world and enjoyed their company. We will recomend Kayaking the Zambezi to travellers if you happen to visit Victoria Falls in Zimbawe. You will take home very pleasant memories.

I traveled to Victoria Falls with my 3 adult children and husband. We did not use a tour company to book our trip. This was our first trip to Africa. We were a little overwhelmed at first by people coming at us from all directions wanting us to either buy something or book a tour on our walk from our hotel to the entrance of Vic Falls.

We decided to wait until the next day to visit the falls as it was 2 hours from closing. As we were walking away, we met a gentleman with a uniform on and a vest that said tourism police. We chatted with him a little while and we saw a sign for a restaurant overlook but it was down a dirt trail with just brush around it. we were a little uncertain and he walked with us. (sorry I can't remember the name of it) It was very nice and and had a nice view of river and zip line across. We had a drink and walked back with him. He mentioned that if we wanted to do a tour he could advise us of a good/reliable company to use.

We walked to the place he recommended and there we met either the manager/owner. He gave us prices for a sunset river cruise on the Wanuka Queens boat by Dingani tours.

They picked us up at our hotel promptly and we were greeted by a happy talkative courteous driver named Johanns. After a 15 min drive we arrived and were met by 4 dancers/singer/drummer welcoming us.

We found out we were going to be the only 5 passengers on the boat that evening.(I think partly bc of the time of year) It holds about 50 people. The captain and server were very gracious. One of the dancers dressed in costume was to be our animal spotter.

We were treated to wonderful appetizers and drinks. We also spotted many animals such as crocodile, hippos, giraffes, and a family of elephants drinking at the river.

The captain and the guide were very knowledgable. The tables and chairs were very solid and comfortable. They looked like they had been hand made and were very nice.

As we turned to head back the sun was setting. It was beautiful with reds and oranges. In the distance with the light getting dimmer(not sure how he saw it) our guide saw a lone male elephant entering the water. Our captain was quick to get there and turn so the elephant went in front of us as the sun was setting behind the elephant.

It is a memory we will never forget.

The price was very reasonable and the service/food was excellent!

Hey, go down to the river, and up to the falls, then get back in the car and go to the Zambezi Gorge Swing and zip line. Crazy scary but fun.

If you have not yet been on safari, this cruise will be interesting for the small amount of wildlife you will see--hippos, crocs, and maybe an elephant. If you have been on safari, it may be a bit disappointing. We did enjoy the sunset and seeing the river close up (our other experience was a helicopter ride). We did the rather inexpensive "booze cruise." Saw lots of other boats, too.

On our trip to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, we cruised down the Zambezi during sunset. It was amazing. We saw hippos, birds AND 4 elephants cross pushing a baby in the middle. Like submarines with their trunks up. It was a breathtaking site!

One of the nicest river cruises on the Zambian side. We had a sundowners cruise & the boatman was from Maramba River Lodge. Ice cold beers & nice finger food.

Instead of a sunset cruise sipping our cocktails, we could not help but joined the Captain the his assistant in identifying sightings of animals along the way. The sunset cruise lasted until the "sun set." which was the whole idea of the cruise. But instead, we saw hippos wallowing in the shallow side of the river, all types of African birds, ducks, lizards. To our disappointment the elephants were no where to be found. The river cruise was a nice welcome to our long flight from Asia. For nature lovers it was what we expected in Africa.

It was a full moon night when we took the sunset cruise on Zambezi River. You see hippo, elephant, crocs during the cruise. The high point is the sunset and tonight minutes after the sunset you could see the full Moon rise as well. Both views were magnificent.

The cruise we took came with drinks and cocktail snacks. Zambezi beer on Zambezi river was good, there was vodka, whisky and wines as well the snacks ok but that was not the reason for the cruise.

What we went for we enjoyed throughly.

The Zambezi is one of the most beautiful rivers I have ever seen. It offers astonishing sunsets, wildlife viewing, and a tranquil setting. Definitely a trip worth taking!

We had the sunset cruise with Wild Horizon Agency at USD63 per each person. We were at the upper deck, encountering some hippos, cros, special kind of birds etc on our way. Although we couldn't see an egg yolk sun at sunset due to the weather, we still enjoy the cruise. There was a family of local Zimbabwe (Harare) at the next table and we had some fun and laugh with each other.

Drinks (red/white wine, soft drinks) unlimited and there was a plate of snack provided too.

Crew on the ferry are nice.
