I have a somewhat fear of heights as I've gotten older but one of the things I wanted to do before I either got too old, physically unable or talked myself out of, was to parasail. So, during my recent trip post Labor Day mini-vaca, we booked the 800' fly high parasail option. I tried to book online but there were several things I wanted to know prior to committing to an online reservation. There was hurricane Larry out in the Atlantic, that was just starting to affect the wind and the ocean. I wanted to be sure we would be going out on the ocean and not the bay. If the trip was cancelled by the captain, would I get a refund or lose my money. I tried calling but no one answered so we stopped in and got all my questions answered so we booked and filled out the waiver. Now, this was 2021 and all over Ocean City, every place, restaurants included, were short staffed and we had a slight delay until both the captain and the mate got there and got the boat ready for us to go out. Though some thought the water was choppy, crew included, I didn't feel it was that bad. There was one group of 3 and 4 groups of 2 going up. Both the captain and the mate were very nice and cordial. Even though I raised my hand to go first, somehow we ended up going last, which was fine. No one else was "dipped" in the ocean but I asked the captain and he said considering how choppy it was, there would be no "just the feet" getting wet. It would be an all or nothing, which was fine. When it was our turn, the mate made sure we were securely in our harness and our lifejackets. Since we saw everyone else go ahead of us, we knew the routine but the mate still talked us through everything. Sitting on our butts, the boat picks up speed, which caused the parachute to pull us up off the back of the boat and up we started to climb into the sky. Now, when it says 400', 600' or 800', you're not that high up in the sky but rather, that's how much line is let out but you're still up in the air and the boat looks tiny below. I wasn't as scared as I thought I'd be but I still had a good grip on my harness that was attached to the parachute. I did get comfortable enough to release one hand and point at things. It was very smooth going up, while up and coming down. I would've thought we'd feel it in the line as the boat hit the waves out on the ocean but nope. After about 8 min we were on our way down and just like the captain said, it was all or nothing. Our feet were in the water first and we kicked and next thing, our butts were in and out of the water a couple of times and quite actually, that's what made it the most fun! We were let down on the back of the boat on our butts very gently, no hard contact at all. The captain knew just what he was doing. After we were sitting with the rest of the people, we noticed the boat's engine was turned off. Somehow, one or more of the parachute lines had gotten around the boat's propeller. The captain and the mate worked for about 20 minutes to gingerly get the line untangled. They had to be careful so not cut themselves on the propeller cause evidently, it's extremely sharp. The boat was bobbing like a cork as the choppy waves moved us out into the ocean, Thank goodness no one got sea sick! Once on our way back in, we got to see quite a few dolphins jumping and the captain said that was all in the plan as to why we were delayed coming back in haha It was a very fun time. It was something on my list of things to do, so check that one off but it's not something I'd necessarily do again but to each their own
