Went for the first time this past weekend and was very disappointed. We called before going to check what was open. We were told that only the zip lines were closed due to covid, but everything else was running. However, no one was working the ropes course and we couldn't find anyone to ask- it was very unorganized and chaotic. We ended up buying tickets to the gem mining and zip coaster instead. We were impressed that the staff were cleaning each coaster, but we waited in line for an hour with other guests who were NOT social distancing nor wearing masks. I was shocked that there was no signage for staying 6 feet apart, and no markings on the ground. I didn't feel safe at all and I wouldn't recommend any of the activities at Wisp unless they address and enforce some of the safety guidelines right now.

Shamrockcb,
Thank you for taking the time to review Wisp Resort. The health and safety of our guests and staff are our top concern during this time. There is signage posted at the Mountain Coaster queuing area that does address social distancing. However, currently, there is not a mandate in the state of Maryland for face masks to be worn outdoors. All ticketing is done inside the Mountain Park building which is the tent like building so we apologize if there was any confusion in getting access to the canopy tours. The complete list of COVID-19 guidelines implemented at Wisp Resort can be found on our website.
We would welcome a conversation to discuss your experience more in depth if you would be so kind as to email your contact information to info@wispresort.com with subject: Trip Advisor, we will have a Manager get in touch with you directly.
Thank you,
-The Team at Wisp

We went to Wisp in July to take advantage of some of the activities they had to offer.
We started with the mountain coaster. The ride itself is fast and fun. You have control of the brakes and can zoom down the mountain pretty fast. However, that also means that slower riders can slow down the line for everyone. We waited about 1.5 hours to get on. When some riders take it down the mountain too slow, the staff has to wait for them to clear the track before they send others up. Three of us went onto the coaster so we bought a 3-pack for $44 (plus tax) so all three of us could go down one time.
We also tried the spider monkey ropes course. This was also fun and challenging. The staff manning the course was helpful and friendly.
Our youngest enjoyed playing on the small playground, too.

A new ticketing system with higher prices. New digital locker system. Same used equipment. Fewer employees and even lower morale..talk of a lot of recent layoffs. Bad reporting on the website about what sloped and lifts are open making it seem better than it is so when you get there you find out even less is open. Fewer food selections in the lodges - no salad bar, no self-serve soup.
It will be interesting to see what happens as the season goes on but I fear that the years Wisp has left as a good ski destination in Maryland are numbered.
They did not blow snow during the time we were here so the conditions were mediocre which we expected given how early in the season it is.
Time will tell.

Dear ChampagneTasteMD,
Thank you for taking the time to review Wisp Resort after your recent stay. The slope report is updated each morning with the current conditions and it is possible that as the day progresses, those conditions are subject to change. We do strive to keep our departments informed of any changes so they can relay the information to guests.
Our food and beverage team has made positive changes in the lodge outlets such as re-opening DC's Bar & Restaurant to offer a full lunch and dinner menu including soups and salads.
December 2019 saw a mild weather pattern return to the mid-Atlantic which did prohibit Wisp from making snow however, our Mountain Operations Team was able to take advantage of early season cold weather to build a base on the slopes to last through it. Today, January 2, the cold weather has returned and we will continue to make as much snow as possible to open more terrain in the near future.
We appreciate your feedback and patronage.
Thank you,
-The Team at Wisp

Family winter getaway...accomplished! We spent the weekend at the Wisp Resort and our family of four had a blast! Friday night snowtubing was fun, although as it was snowing some lanes were a bit slow. Saturday the kids spent the day in Wisp's Ski School and other than my oldest getting sun burnt #MomFail, they had a blast and my oldest ended the day on the green slopes! Husband and I spent the day kid free skiing and the runs were nicely groomed and not too crowded. The food court is what you are used to at a ski lodge, ok in quality and expensive in price, but no surprises! After a long day of skiing we got a pizza and kicked it in the indoor pool and hot tub, the pool is quite large and heated. At night I had some work to do and the high speed WiFi is included and worked well. Our room had two Queens a pull-out couch and a mini fridge, which accommodated us perfectly. Sunday, we rode the mountain coaster and the kids had so much fun we had to buy more tickets. Great overall weekend, with lots to do, just don’t forget your wallet!

Wisp need to enforce it own Covid policies. They were enforced earlier in the season now I rarely see staff asking skiers to ask up. Today the lift coordinator was putting unrelated people on the lift 5.

Family visited wisp over memorial day weekend. Beautiful day for family outing. Chose the mountain coaster, which h was a fun ride for all ages. Poorly managed; waited over an hour when it could easily have been a 20-30 min wait if they had let more than 2cars go every 10 min. Crazy!!! Even though staffing was obviously an issue they had sufficient staff while we were there.

We have enjoyed Wisp resort for 2 New Years Eves now. We went snow tubing in 2020 and also 2018 and have had the best time playing like kids. We warmed up in one of the restaurant/bars and had a drink (a bit pricey) to celebrate the New Year! Lots of fun!!
We rode the mountain coaster on our first visit and we stayed at the resort. The last trip we stayed at a nearby lodge called LakeStar and drove to the resort. Both visits were great! Nearby restaurants in McHenry were also very good.

Terrible experience with the Mountain coaster- Surprised us and we had to spend $61 for 2 people instead of $34. Okay. And then the "4-5 minute ride" was 4 minutes going up, and MAYBE 90 seconds coming down. Couldn't go speedy at all either, was very limited and automatically breaked almost the entire time. It was over before it started. Not sure why it was a 30 minute line on a random afternoon for this experience. You are better off going to a park and playing there for free.

Family just spent a week skiing. The hotel itself is dirty, smells like mold, and falling apart. Literally the 70s style drop ceiling tiles fell, exposing leaky pipes and rotting joists. There were buckets on the floor at an entrance where water was dripping. My 9 yr old daughters faces looked so disappointed at the poor condition of the room, it was embarrassing. I can’t even describe the bath tub, it was disgusting. One of my kids noticed a half filled water bottle under the nightstand. The walls and ceiling had water marks everywhere, imagine the mold growing underneath. Light fixture was hanging down detached, and paint was peeling off in several places. May the pics speak for themselves. The 2 stars reflects the staff's responsiveness and kindness, but that was pretty much the only positive. When I asked my kids whether they’d like to come back, they said the skiing was ok, but not the hotel, they do NOT want to stay here again. Just for frame of reference, we’re not a family that regularly stays at 4-5 star places, mostly places like Fairfield Inns, Ramada’s, Best Westerns, Holiday Inn Expresses, etc. This place is way below these chains, sadly.

We played a round of disc golf and thoroughly enjoyed it. The course has a nice variety of holes— some uphill/flat, some long/short, some challenging/easy. It was neat to see the ski lifts and other evidence of the winter activities there. While the upper (back 9) on the course is not open because the lift is not operating, the 9 holes were plenty to occupy our family for 90 minutes. We saw long lines for the mountain coaster and were worried that the course would be crowded, but thankfully, it was pretty empty most of the time.

My daughters are going there tomorrow and ride the cable car and I do not want to. Is there a lounge that I can wait in/

I’m not sure what the cable car is, but if it’s at the same place with the mountain coaster and other activities, there is an indoor building (where you buy tickets) that has food for sale. I am pretty sure there are tables and chairs in there.
Is there an out door pool or beach area there?
Katrien V
Crozet, VA101 contributions
I don't think so. It's right next to the lake, but the only "beach" area at the lake is in the state park, which is a couple of miles away. I did not see a swimming pool.

are pet dogs welcomed in the summer?
Wisp_Resort

Jackie d,
Thank you for your question. The Lodge at Wisp does allow smaller dogs and there is a pet fee associated with the stay. The resort itself does allow leased dogs. We just ask that you please clean up after your pet and be respectful of other guests. Hope to see you and your four-legged friend on the mountain soon!
Thank you,
Wisp Resort

I am coming with a group. What kind of rooms do you have? Do you have rooms with 2 double beds? Are there chairs in the rooms? Does each room have a private bath? For a group, are meals ordered from a menu or are they buffet style? Do people dress up for dinner? I am coming in November with the Knittreat. Are you providing a coffee break? Is there a coffee maker in the room? Is there a refrigerator in the room? Thanks.

Sounds like you're looking to stay at the hotel. I would check directly with them. However, there is also the option of renting a condo or house through Railey Mountain Lake Vacations, which I would recommend exploring

How many ski runs and difficulty of double blacks ? Tree skiing ? Height of mountain and how many lifts ?
Is there a train to mountain or alternately easiest way to get there. We are a group of 4 coming from Australia

I've skied in Europe and Colorado. Wisp does not have that type of elevation or terrain. however Wisp is a very nice family ski resort for easy skiing. We brought our 5 yr old there for his first ski trip. The black slopes are not too difficult. Good vertical but not very long. transport to the mountain in by car or bus.
