May 2014 • Friends
We had planed on a trip to Washington and had booked a night tour for the 5th of May. I had been fighting a virus for about 2 weeks and on the 4th my wife woke up with painful earaches in both ears and the virus progressed from there. Needless to say flying the next morning was impossible so we stayed home. Sunday afternoon I emailed Eddie to let him know we wouldn't be joining his tour the next night and assumed that our tour fare would be forfieted, if for no other reason due to the short notice. I was surprised when he replied by email and wished us a speedy recovery as well as requesting our home address so he could send us a full refund! The refund arrived this week with an apology for the delay due to his being busy. In my book, Eddie Davenport is a true professional business person and judging from his other reviews a terrific tour guide.

Seeing the monuments at night is awesome. Eddie is very knowledgeable and had information on everything, whether we stopped or were driving by it. It was only the 3 of us which was great. I used Groupon as others giving reviews suggested. I had my 80 year old mother with me and Eddie even had a step stool to help her get in and out of th SUV. He spent a lot of time at the Pentagon. It was a really good presentation. I learned so much. We also got to stop at the Iwo Jima Memorial which was stunning. If you only have time for one tour, take it at night and go with Eddie.

Edward provided a fantastic personalised tour of Washington for our family of 6 from Australia. He was knowledgable, articulate and friendly. He is clearly passionate about Washington and the great moments in the history of the USA, and gave us great insights and access to the most important sights. Edward was very accommodating to our timetable, collecting us from Union Station and returning us at the end of the tour. Very convenient, especially as transport is provided. I highly recommend Edward's tour.

Eddie was a fantastic tour guide and driver. Loved that it was just our family in his mini-van - it was like a family friend giving us a personal tour.
In addition to the main attractions around the Mall and Tidal Basin, it was a treat to get to venture across the bridge to the US Marine's memorial as well as the Pentagon 9/11 memorial.
I highly recommend Eddie for your family or small group tour!

In a nutshell:
1. The 14 year old and 60 year old (and me the 42 year old) all loved it.
2. Eddie drives a minivan and does not take more than 6 people total -- and he is an incredibly safe driver --- more than anybody else around us on the road that night.
3. The small group and car gets you closer to the monuments, and is faster to load than any bus tour --- the bus tour people looked way to large.
4. Eddie knows his history in and out --- and grew up in DC, so he has a breadth and depth of knowledge that brings everything to life!
5. Eddie gives clear, excellent directions for walking around the monuments. Essentially, he gives history during the driving parts, and gives you 15-30 minutes at each monument to explore on your own. It is a perfect balance.
6. I was so surprised at how striking the monuments are at night --- because the background buildings fade out of view, it seems to cast a focused reverance on each monument, which is fitting -- and even my phone took great pictures!
7.PS - I was surprised to learn that most of the monuments have bathrooms that are open at night (til midnight I think) -- so that good to know since its about a 3 hour tour, depending on how quick your group goes --- on cold nights people tend to walk faster.
8. Just book it - we all felt the money was well spent, the van was always warm on our cold night and I learned more than a whole year of American History in high school....plus Eddie is a truly caring person who loves history - he is great at making all ages feel welcome.

My family of 6 booked the evening tour on a chilly night in December. Eddie was extremely knowledgeable about the monuments we visited. He gave tons of information, which made my history-teacher-Mom very happy. Eddie added two stops to include the Capitol Christmas Tree and the National Christmas Tree. He was patient and kind, making sure to include my kids in the conversation. He was a fantastic, safe driver. It was awesome to be able to drive right up to the sights, which would have been difficult to do on one of the bigger tour buses. Eddie even took us back to our hotel at the end of the night, saving us a trip on the Metro! I will recommend his tour to anyone I know who will be visiting the DC area.

Darn it, but I can't remember the name of our driver! My tour was on a Wednesday evening however, (Nov. 13, 2019) so hopefully the owners/management give him my kudos. He was extremely knowledgeable and provided lots of insight as he drove our small group around the memorials for gorgeous evening views. It was unseasonably cold that night (about 25 degrees), but he kept the car warm and inviting waiting for us to hop back in after we'd hurry back from taking our photos. I was on my own, and the other passengers were two other couples (a married couple and a mother and daughter). Everyone agreed that our driver and the overall experience was top-notch. Despite the cold weather, the only downside was the crowds -- lots and lots of school teens whose teachers/chaperones definitely had not had any influence on delivering respect for the sites we were all visiting. They were loud, ran around, slid across the marble floors and generally interrupted our visit. When I mentioned how obnoxious the kids were to our driver, he mentioned his technique when he gives tours to school groups. (He is a second-generation tour guide in D.C. His father was one as well.) He explained how he tells the kids that their actions and behaviors reflect on him and other tour guides and have a lasting influence on their reputations long after the kids have returned home. He asks them to consider their impact on others as they are visiting the memorials. He said these talks help considerably, and I was impressed by his sincerity in trying to help the kids be more respectful. Anyway, besides being an awesome guide, he was also wonderful in getting all of us back to our respective dwellings after the tour was over. With the extreme cold, that was an even greater gift of not having to worry about catching an Uber or taxi home at the late hour. (The tour is about 3 hours long and starts at 7. And while it picks up in a busy area that would likely have had quick service in getting an Uber, it was nice not having to consider where I could shelter for the few minutes I'd be waiting for my ride to arrive.)

Overall, I highly recommend the evening tour! My photos are gorgeous, and it's been nearly 3 weeks since my trip, and I'm still going back to admire them!

Everyone that we encountered specially with the hop on hop off was so helpful, so informative, and so kind. We went around three times on the day trip with different drivers and learn something from each one of them. And the evening ride was with still another driver and yet more information. We strongly suggest taking the hop on hop off with more than one driver

We really enjoyed this tour and my teens loved it! Eddie is super knowledgeable and funny. He answered our questions and was very accommodating. It is a beautiful tour and if you don’t do any other tours in the city this is a must!

Eddie was a spectacular guide--professional, friendly, knowledgeable. Our entire family had a good time. His evening tour hit all of the major spots and he provided enough information to make each stop enjoyable. Of course, you will want to go back to some of the sites on your own time. Eddie's information and explanation of the Pentagon Memorial was great! Without him there, we would have just viewed the site and we would have never known the significance of many of the memorial's aspects. I won't spoil it for you here. Take the tour and see (hear) for yourself.
