Locked Up Tight
Sep 2021
Too bad this beautiful building has been locked up for over a year due to COVID. The C&O Canal federal park has all visitor centers shuttered.

Trains and lots of history
Nov 2019
Great opportunity to learn some of the rich history of the canal system and trains. You get a chance to view how the canal boats were built and used "Back in the day"

We found the visitor center because we were taking the Western Maryland Scenic trainride. The staff was very helpful and had lots of information.

Ok for Historic Information
Oct 2019
There are a variety of displays pertaining to the coal industry, the C&O Canal and Cumberland history. Definitely not a must-see experience. We visited before the WMRR train ride. Once is definitely enough for both.

Fall Foliage Train Trip
Oct 2019
We stopped at Visitor Center to pick up our Train Tickets and waited for boarding. While waiting we looked at the Gift shops and planned on getting a few things after our trip. Very nice people at center , and was helpful in answering our questions about the trip.

A Must When Visiting This Town
Sep 2019
This is a must see when visiting this local community. It is well maintained and represents the town well in promoting itself to visitors. Historically markerss outside and inside it has the charm of the 1800's. It has two well stocked gift shops and you can purchase your tickets for a train ride. Get here early as the train rides are very popular!

Good place to start

The Cumberland Visitor Center official name is "Visitor Center for C&O Canal National Historical Park and Allegany County". It is housed in the old Western Maryland Railway Station. The station was built in 1913 and the Visitor Center is at the bottom end north end of the building. The visitor center also house the Canal Museum which focuses on the C&O canal and Locks of the canal and the life of and history of the area and the city. Recommend to stop here first before getting into tourist stuff.
